I'm sure I'm not the only one but so far I've not noticed any bios from the UK.

I'm a newcomer to the world of sax, I've been playing for about 15 months. Unfortunately due to ridiculous amounts of work I'm pretty much restricted to around half an hour of play a week (at the moment I get too tired after that) and I've had to postpone my lessons for a while.

I do enjoy playing the sax though, I just wish I had more time to practice.

Hi . I own / run Eastcoastwind a sax specialist in the UK. I mainly supply the good sax shops around the UK with Runyon Mouthpieces / Charlie A gig dust/Consoli ligs/ Pad clamps and repair vintage horns etc etc. We specialise in finding US products and bringing them to the UK. Basically all you read about on this board. Its good to see a few UK participants.

Hi

One more from UK.... I'm in Chippenham, Wiltshire.

Play tenor (Kohlert stencil) and clarinet in a Bristol based church worship team, and have just bought my first alto (Yeah, I know most people do it the other way round, but I've never been one to follow the crowd). Am loving the Alto (a 40's Pan American), I can see it getting a lot of use in the future.

Love to hear from anyone nearby, particularly the Dorset based technician above!

srmiltonATbtinternetDOTcom will find me.

All the best,

Stewart

Hi, I'm also from the UK but actually I'm playing in a band currently in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada at the moment. I'm from Calne in Wiltshire originally - so hi there Stewart Milton!

I've been playing alto sax for about 15 years - started on a tenor that got stolen, after which I could only afford an alto! Currently doing latino style stuff with a Mexican guitarist friend, as well as some blues and jazz on the side. Would LOVE to get a new mpc for my pretty knocked about Yamaha alto, but having trouble finding one I like! Hope you guys in the UK are having a decent summer out there - it's FREEZING here -still, moving on to Boston soon! 8)

Hi All

I was born and raise in Cincinnati Ohio but emigrated to the UK 6 years ago (long story, and only slightly interesting). I bebopped around from Worcester to Bath to Cardiff and have now settled in the Forest Of Dean, Gloucestershire, where I own a children's home. Due to be married to a nice British lass in September and just had my UK passport application approved- so it likes you are stuck with me for good!

I currently play bari in the Monmouth BiG Band but generally find the scene here in Gloucestershire pretty dismal. Not many gigs, and unbelievably NO jam sessions. Reluctantly woodshedding and hoping to make enough contacts to get something happening. The scene in Bath/Bristol was pretty cool with lots going on.

Would love to hear from other horn players around my area- I'm getting fairly bored with practicing to just Aebersold Play Alongs. Thank goodness for cyberspace!

I'm based in Southampton, spent 9 months in Essex, (Bassement bar in Chelmsford, can be a cool jam on Tuesdays). PLayed sax (A,T, & S) 18y, have Yanis, Yama, & Elkhart on sop (ok, not cool, but not a lot of call for sop), love Dukoff's on alto, Gregory custom/Guadala's on Tenor, links on sop, like to try selmer soloist. Where are the funkiest jams in the UK?
How about starting a players convention in UK? in the middle of the country?
Cheers

Hi. Im thinking of booking a stand at this years music Fair in Birmingham in November. I went last year and its full of guitar heros. I didnt have a stand but would love to have given the guitar headbangers a run for their money with a mind blowing Quantum 10 with spoiler. They wouldnt know what hit them. If you want to talk saxophones we have a saxophone stand at this years British Music Fair next week 6th -7th july in Birminghams indoor arena. Its mainly for the retail trade but we are there so will invite everyone who can blow a note and anyone who wants to talk saxes. If you get stopped at the door ask for John on the East Coast Wind stand and I will get you in. I found Alex Cardy who was the ex Myatts horn man up a firemans ladder. He will be there with me on the stand up to no good. Try out those Steve Goodson saxes you all hear about but cant get. We have a large supply of gig dust to keep us going. Come on down brother saxes.

Just found this thread.

I'm in Aberdeen in Scotland. I've been learning sax for about three years or so. I have a Superdynaction Tenor (and a Yamaha I picked up locally), a Buescher Trutone alto I got cheap on ebay and a B&M soprano I found even cheaper. I'm not very good but I'm keen. Unfortunately until I can managed to retire I'm aware that I just dont have enough time to practice. I havent learned chords or many scales though I understand modes better. Been listening mainly to Tina Brooks and Hank Mobley - one of these days I will manage something like that!

Ideally I would like to find a trumpet player on the same level as me to practice with but anyone else with a sax locally would be a godsend.

Is there anyone else up here?

Anyone in the area fancy a jam?

Well, I've been reading SOTW for a few months now and I had not noticed this thread.

I'm in Market Harborough, not far from Paul and Amy, although as you have guessed from my first name, I'm originally from the other side of the Channel. But with 10 years in the UK, and drinking tea, I have become semi-civilised.

Playing the sax is a recent pleasure for me and I feel it's going very well. Of course, as a decent piano player who can read scores, it's easier when you only have to concentrate on the embouchure and the fingers.

I've just upgraded to a Yamaha YAS-62 and that has only served to increase the pleasure of playing after starting with an Earlham. That wasn't a bad sax but the Yamaha is just miles better.

One thing, if we organise a jam one day, I have the keyboards !

Happy playing,

Robaldo

I'm new to the site so just wanted to say hi! I now live in Birmingham and am acting Chair of the National Sax Choir which is great fun and very demanding - I think I've detected a couple of members past and present through one or two postings!

I've been playing for about 14 years now in a very on and off fashion, but always as an extra to my day job (systems analyst). Problem is, there's just never enough time to practice...

Living in sunny southampton, home of dodgy premiership management antics. Been playing 14 years.
I play tenor and soprano.
Just passed my Grade 8 jazz sax with honours so I've just treated myself to a Yamaha Custom Z tenor to go with my Yss62 Soprano. Old tenor is a vey nice Yanagisawa T901 with bronze crook - on sale to a good home!
Play in a big band, sax quartet, r and b band and various jazz pick up groups.
I'm up for any re`sonably local get-togethers!!

Hi All.....

Been reading for months and finally got around to registering....

Live in West London and moving back to Farnborough soon....

Play tenor / alto since school. Stopped started stopped started stopped started... never had my own horn always borrowed.

A rock / pop band started up at my last job, which was the perfect incentive. So I bought a Dolnet Tenor off Ebay along with an Otto Link and Runyon... and have been playing with the Band for the last five years....(Web Site soon to follow) The Should Be Band...gig about once a month... Bass, lead, rythym, drum, keys, 2 fem vocalists and me)

I also have a cheapy soprano to practice on when I'm travelling around....

At the point where to enjoy my playing more I need a mentor / teacher and start putting some serious ground work in....

Cheers
Lee

Hi all

Based in Lerwick, Shetland - half way between Scotland and Norway, but Scottish islands all the same.

I have just ordered my Tenor from Cyber Sax in the USA and at 49 I am definately a 'late bloomer' (more like a wind-blown thistle actually), although I played Bb Clarinet bewteen the ages of 9 and 20 in Edinburgh, where I was brought up.

Thought I'd add myself to the list - living in Devizes, Wiltshire. I have been playing tenor (never alto) almost 25 years since school, off and on. Started shedding again recently and loving it, finally getting around to learning changes.

Just bought a '26 Buescher True Tone off eBay and I am off to collect it next weekend. Current horn is a 20-year old YTS-23 which will now be my back-up horn; I'll probably give it to one of my kids when they are old enough and want to play sax like their dad.

Best wishes

Bruce

Hi
Have been reading this Forum for a while now and found it very helpful and interesting. Just noticed this thread come to life again so thought I would add my bit.

Originally from East London, now living in Bishops Stortford, Herts.

Originally an oboist (which I still play - having started when 10 and am now the old side of 45), but now play regularly the Alto (Yani 901 with Jody Jazz 7 mouthpiece and Vandoren ZZ 3 reeds) and Soprano (Yani 902 - straight - with Jody Jazz 6 mouthpiece with Vandoren ZZ 3 reeds). I play with the New Redbridge Wind Orchestra, as well as playing at Church each week and occasionally with others for fun and charity dos.

Can play most things (with a bit of practice) when I have music in front of me (at a guess I suspect I am about Grade 8 standard on a good day). Would like to be better at improvising (which I have a go at most weeks when playing in Church - they seem to like it, but are not the most critical of audiences), but have limited time and no-one to practice with. Would be interested in getting together with others in the region to play stuff for fun, which may develop into some gigs.

Anyone else in the West Essex, East Herts, South Cambs region?

greetings all

i'm a tenor player from south london and have been coming to the site for about a month - definitely digging it. i played alto as a teenager to semi-pro level then didn't really play for about 7 years during which time i bought a sampler etc. and had started releasing drum'n'bass records. got back into it about 5 years ago and switched to tenor (i have a conn transitional model). don't really have a regular gig - just sit in at various places when i feel like it. to be honest i find it it hard to find the time and haven't played out in over 6 months. still love it though!

anyway thats me.

Hello! I`m Steve from the Medway area of Kent. I currently play a 1967 Buffet SuperDynaction Tenor thats wasted on me! I have been playing for 18 months although the way my work pattern runs I suppose I have only been able to practice for half that time...DOH! I`m in my late forties and wish I had started playing when I was a teenager...but thats life!
Some days I`m a Sax God....blowing up a storm :D hardly hitting any duff notes and scaring only two out of our three cats from the house! ...the next day I suck and put the instrument of torture away again after 10-15 minutes....does that happen to anyone else?....good days, bad days?
I probably have a rather romanticized image of sax playing.....1930`s....dark, smokey nightclubs playing with a small band........OR...a bright dancefloor...lead tenor in Glenn Millers band....Damn..I was born out of my time ;) ...Whoa Steve, enough....I`ll get my coat.

Hi guys, I'm the new girl in town! I got me a yani. A901 nearly 6 weeks ago, and have been trying to blow the roof off ever since. Neighbours haven't complained, but I know one of them is actually deaf anyway, before I started. This was my 40th birthday present- managed to persuade hubby to buy me something decent-sax is so much better than diamonds!
Unfortunately I spend too much time practising and the housework never gets done anymore! Hey, one has to get one's priorities right- I've spent the last thirty nine years in waiting- I've got some serious catching up to do!

Anyway, sax is great, I can make some real groovy noises. Is the sax. as it easy as it appears. or am I likely to hit some big wall soon?
I love this website- it's like the tardis, there are huge chasms of info on here, if only you know where to look!

It might be called 'sleepy' Suffolk, where I come from (near Ipswich) but I'm as sure as hell gonna wake 'em all up with my horn! 8-)

Sut Mae!

I'm a 47 yo welshman, who started on the soprano about 7 months ago. just about to begin learning alto as well. Hero is Jan Garbarek, hence the soprano (R&C Deluxe R1 straight) which has a lovely tone. Any visitors to Wales very welcome to drop by - I know nobody, apart from my teacher, who plays the sax, especially soprano!

Hello everyone....Just to say that the saxophone is not unknown down here in North Devon. Tenor mainly, (Customised R&C R1, & Grassi "Pro 2000)...a bit of C Melody for a change, & plenty of blues harmonica.

I own up to living in Essex but came from Surrey originally. Playing 2 of the same saxes my dad played around Guildford from c1936 onwards, plus a Yani stencil soprano and a small menagerie of guitars.

Stewart

Hi all

Am I the only one who will admit to living in Sheffield, the car crime capital of the world!

I've been playing tenor for about 6 months and I'm just about to take my grade 2 test. I'm also in the brink of buying a Bari!

I played my teachers a few times in a small group i'm in and fell in love with the sound. That was about 2 months ago and I swore I'd own one before Christmas. I don't think the neighbours will be too happy, one of them says my tenor is too loud!

Hi Vaughanb,

Lived in and around Sheffield from 1974 to 1999 when I move up to Morecambe.

Lived in Nether Edge, Crookes, Abbeydale Rd areas. Still have friends there especially in the circus world.

Welcome to Sax on the web and sax playing.

Do you get down the 111 club at all. I get back to Sheff every now and again.

Go for the Bari. I'd love one, just can't afford it.

If you're into sites like this try Pete Thomas' site based in the UK.

Hey guys - been on here a while but just found this UK post. Seen a few UK peeps around but not many.

Am in Taunton, Somerset (hello neighbour delboy!) and playing Alto. I have had two lessons, currently trying to nail a decent embouchure! Played various instruments in school so have a musical background.

Went to see my first jazz/blues gig today - to see how its supposed to be done - and wow! it was amazing! I'd recommend checking out the bands who play Sundays at the Brewhouse in Taunton!

Hi LisaSimpsonwannabe

Good to hear there are bands locally to see how its done properly. My Sax is with a repairer in Taunton so I am just trying out reeds (rico royals and Vanderens)with the mouthpiece after walking around John Packers music shop with my jaw on the floor...sax heaven... and borrowing my teachers Yamaha tomorrow for lesson 2
What I lack in talent I make up for with enthusiasm although my children and cats have left home

LisaSimpsonWannabe

John Packer does appear to be a good store - although I got pounced on by a staff member before I had a chance to browse....I needed help admittedly!

Another good one is Dawkes in Totnes..... a bit of a trek but worth it!

FYI - If you get the opportunity, try a fibracell reed - my med-soft has made the learning curve far smoother, and I'm progressing dramatically more than on my regular orange rico's.

Given that we are at the same-ish level, mebbe we should hook up when we're a bit better - see if we can learn a bit from each other!

delboy1961
11-27-2006, 01:23 PM
sounds cool hooking up a few lessons down the line as my teacher is biased as he wants my money and any non players scoff at my 2 notes whereas Im overjoyed at playing 2 notes and moving my fingers so it would be nice to have an unbiased opinion ( or a right good laugh)
I spoke with my neighbour today who told me they thought their guinea pig had escaped and was squealing in distress and then realised it was me practising so that should give you a clue to my playing ability

I had a really rubbish practice session last night - think its a Monday thing actually.....

The problem with lessons is that I feel that I should have progressed significantly between each, and I don't really know that I am, so come tuesday, I'm panicking that I only have two more days left to nail what I've been trying to learn.....!!!

Weekly - i think I'll drop to fortnightly after 6-8 weeks or so. Does that sound like a good idea????

There will be some who'll kill me for saying so but I think fortnightly is a good idea - it saves you money - if you pay lesson by lesson - and gives you more chance to get to grips with the material (the reasons I had fortnightly lessons myself). Having said that, a fortnight's gap without guidance gives you more opportunity to compound errors you may not realise you are making.

I have taught some of my students weekly, the majority fortnightly and some maybe a bit more flexible than this, especially the adults who are just wanting to play for pleasure with no particular goal (like grades) in mind, apart from playing as well as they can!

John were you also at the recent saxophone day at the RCM in Manchester?? I'm sure I saw your stand there, had a very nice P Mauriat tenor that I liked.

Oh yes I'm from the UK too, Gods own country; the county of Yorkshire :D

Lisa,
Im having fortnightly lessons as its too expensive unless youve got a good deal but oppsite to you I might go weekly once I learn more complicated things as someone said before no point doing the wrong thing for two weeks

Greetings All,

First Post :)

I'm living just north of Cambridge, having lived around London most of my life. I played Sax at school for a year or so (silver plated Selmer Tenor), and have been wanting to pick it up again for some years (25 years), so a couple of days before Christmas I ordered a Trevor James Alto to learn on. Just found a local tutor and am awaiting a call back. The basics came back to me like I'd never stopped playing so now I have a huge buzz wanting to move forward quickly. I play at least an hour a day.

Look forward to taking part and learning lots from all you smart and experienced people on here :)

Greetings to the other Cambridge person I saw posting in this thread.

A happy new year to everyone!!! Don't forget to pick up a box of "Andrews" or "Resolve" before you go out tonight!!

Cheers

T.

Hi, I'm in Barns Green, a small village near Horsham, West Sussex and I'm new to SOTW.

I played guitar when I was younger and more recently turned to tenor sax for a year or so before stopping, so this is the second time I've tried to learn and this time I'm determined to do it properly.

If anyone is in my area and can recommend a good teacher I'd be very grateful indeed.

Hi - I'm near Swansea.

Had a few sax lessons when I first started on alto a couple of years ago, but since then just listening and playing, listening and playing ... mostly Blues, Rock, Jazz ... Dave McMurray, Dick Heckstall-Smith, Grover Washington.

Personal ambition ... to play sax like Jerry Garcia (that's right, he didn't - but just imagine). 8-)

Based in Ely near Cambridge UK, very much a late starter, couldn't keep up with my son's Trumpet playing on the Piano, so looked for a suitable "blowy" instrument to "compete" with him, Tenor Sax seemed like a good idea. So walked into the shop off the street, walked out with a 2nd hand Selmer Series II and haven't looked back. Wish I'd discovered the instrument 40 years ago, but I can at least try and make up for lost time!

I have introduced the folk session players I usually play Melodeon and Guitar with to the Sax (a C-Mel, so no problem with transposition), it works surprisingly well - though better on the slower pieces than the fast ones and fantastic for the harmonies. It can compete with the volume of the rest of them make far better than most other woodwinds! Nobody was walked out yet anyway!

Same time as I discovered the Sax, I discovered Jazz, wow, what a whole new world I've found!

I'm from Altrincham, South Manchester/ Trafford/Cheshire wherever they decide to place it this month!!
I got my beautiful sparkly alto for my 43rd birthday last May and started lessons in September. I had no prior musical knowledge at all so it was (and still is!) rather scary to me. But it is absolutely fantastic and I love it more each time I play. I would love to hear of anything going on locally - well within 50miles ;-)

Hi All - been here a short while but just found this thread.

My names John I am 47 and I live Between Stafford and Wolverhampton. I would luv to meet up with other like minded players.

I have been playing officially since October last year, however I only had a couple of lessons up until the end of January this year, but since then I have been having them most weeks.

My tutor is really great, she is really in tune with my style of music, I don't know how you would classify it, but it is probably "Swing", stuff like Bobby Darin, Ella Fitzgerald and the Rat Pack would sing to.

Good or Bad she feels that I am currently between a Grade 2 or 3, some days I fell like I am a 1:shock: :D

It's getting easier now and the squeaking rarely happens, I practice an hour a day wherever possible, I just need to make it sound more musical rather than just a collection of notes off a sheet of paper.

Hi all!

My name's Frank and I'm 39, living near Warrington and working in central Manchester. I've been playing, oh about since my YTS275 arrived last week(!) and am thoroughly enjoying it!

More of an old weed than a late bloomer, but you can't have everything (where would you put it?)!

You can blame this purchase and obsession primarily on Mel Collins (as heard on the Dire Straits live album Alchemy). He has a lot to answer for...!

Am in Bishops Stortford. Have been playing quite a few years off and on. I come from Ilford where I play regularly in a Wind Orchestra/Concert Band. Would be interested in getting together with others locally though.

I play Alto and Sop (hoping to get a Tenor soon), as well as being an Oboist.

What sort of thing you interested in?

I noticed others from our area and perhaps we can get a few together. Would also be interested in being part of a horn section in a band (rock, blues, jazz, etc).

PM me with some idea of when you may be free for a chat.
