I still have the one I bought in 86. This horn still is a bright screamer and I don't think the later 62's, or the new ones now are as good. Anyone else notice this. My horn had yamaha painted on it, not engraved. I've noticed the ones that are engraved don't sound quite as bright. Anyone else notice this?

I bought a YTS-62 in about 81 or 82, and it was a great, great horn. I wish I still had it. However, I'm really liking my new Keilwerth. :-)

I bought my used yts-62 in 1987. It has Yamaha painted in a burgandy color. I like it a lot, as it's easy to work on, looks great, and sounds great in the rock/punk band I play in.
I wonder how old my sax really is? Is there somewhere I can look up it's age based on serial number?
thanks,
Les

From what I have heard Yamaha's are hard to date. I know if it has a painted logo it makes it more likely it's from the period 80-90. The serial numbers are not sequential so it makes it tough to really know unless you bought the sax new yourself. But if the logo is painted on, you can be pretty sure it was put together in japan in the 80's. If I'm correct they switched putting them together to the states, and then began engraving the logo on in the 90's.

i bought a used yas-62 abot a month and a half ago, i went to the yamaha website, in the questions and contact area, sent a message asking when my horn was built with the serial number and model, i got a email reply a after saying it was made in may 1989,
i knew my horn was fairly old because of the painted on yam logo, but besides that, i thinki was used a few months and forgotten in a closet.
it playes wonderfully, in any style, with any mouthpiece (so far), it even outplays my old selmer series II which i loved, but now am unconfortable with, lol
so, for info on your sax, goto the yam website, great response times:P

About 18 months ago I ordered an YTS62SE. It took 3 months to get since it was a special order, and had to be made to fill the order. W. Minor posted once that the silver plated horns seem to get more attention. In any case this horn is as good as any, it has held up very nicely against several of the best Mark VI's that I know that several of my Pro playing friends have.
One of the guys did the tenor solos in the Chicago Movie.
His horn is a bit darker, mine a bit brighter. He prefers a bit darker, I prefer a bit brighter.
I have played older 62's so I have a reference point on the older 62's.
The day I received it, I was amazed, this horn just sings. It might just be dumb luck, but I’ll take it any day

I have a YBS-52 bari I purchased new in 1987. 1.5 years ago I played it against a 52 and 62 at the sax symposium near Wash DC. They all sounded the same to me. I prefer the low Bb key motion on the older Yamahas (non-tilting spatula).
