I'm in an area where I do not have easy access to a professional teacher so am relying on some self teaching on the Alto Sax. Does anyone have a good list of books, videos, CD's I could buy that would start me off. I can read music, have a student Alto Sax, and am egar to learn.

Thanks for any suggestions or help.

I bought 'The Art of Saxophone Playing' by Larry Teal because it basically covers everything and is great for me as a beginner. I'm a beginner and I'm finding it very helpful. I got it because this website is great for recommending things, and this book is always mentioned here. There's a link on this website that takes you straight to the right page.

Another book called 'Absolute Beginners: Alto Saxophone' (Wise Publications) has a CD. I have it (though I play soprano, but there's still good stuff in there for me) and it's very well laid out and the recordings are all clear and well put together. It's also available from Amazon.co.uk

I also have a book called 'A Tune a Day Saxophone' that I'm working through with my teacher. And speaking of, I'd really advise you trying to get a teacher at some stage, if you can. I found that there's stuff that I just had to be shown! I was doing everything wrong, from simple things like not putting the mouthpiece on right, not keeping my fingers bent to obvious embouchure problems. In the long run a teacher will cut out all the bad habits. Just keep an eye out for a teacher, but in the mean time get stuck into the books, especially the Larry Teal one.

As it has been mentioned several times, here on this forum, Jamey Aebersold's playalongs are a great place to start with. So are Jerry Bergonzi's. And if you're feeling adventourus, you should try Band-In-a-Box...
