View Full Version : How to Play Piccolo LOUD
I can do pretty well on the flute and play the piccolo ok. What's tough is getting the very high volume levels required in some pit orchestra busy dance sections and overtures (or concert band.) I have the biggest problems at the low end of the second register, say D2-G2 and for very high notes above F3. Any advice how to work on this? Based on some lessons and suggestions, I've spent time getting a focused, muscial sound at moderate dynamics rather than simply blasting away. I've also been trying to make sure I'm not rolled in too far. Still, there seems to be something I'm just not getting.
My picc is a decent model, a YPC-81. I've tried the lower end Yamahas and a new Gemeinhart Seaman and this one plays better.
Thanks in advance.

The Pic usually sails effortlessly over the top of any ensemble. I always seem to have the opposite problem of never getting the instrument soft enough to blend readily. I have a loud flute with a solid Platinum lip plate/chimney and this can realy drop some volume when pushed.
My instant thought is too relax and imagine the sound sailing over the ensemble and filling the room. I realise that this sounds a little wishy washy, but it usually works for me. Projection rather than out and out volume normally wins the day.
In most orchestration (even shows), there's nothing else in the piccolo range. Lock in tuning to lower octaves and produce your best even sound. A resonant clear, clean sound, and you'll be heard for miles.

The piccolo will never be loud for the lower half of its range. It was designed for high notes. <P>Volume definitely should not be a problem above F in the 3rd octave. I suggest you ask for a single lesson from a piccolo player in your local professional orchestra.

Like the others said, volume is usually not a problem. But some piccs are louder and richer in the low register than others. I have a wood Moennig with a high wave headjoint that is especially good. I got it 8 or so years ago at WW&BW. But it is better to optimize your picc for the 3rd octave response. Up there its just you.
