I just received a Bell #2 bocal that I won on Ebay. I was hoping just to get a good backup for my Schreiber KE bocal, but the Bell is wonderful.
The response up and down is very, very even. Tuning is superior - especially middle Eb.
The price was right too. $200 USD plus shipping. Brand new Bell bocals are going for about $550.

Ahh, but does it play bright or dark? High baffle or low baffle? Short or long facing? How does it compare to a Link?
I feel a GAS attack coming on. Must...buy... more...bocals! Wait a minute, I don't play bassoon.:D

Is there a difference between the standard and solid silver models? What about wood? Gold? Copper? Underslung versus normal... oh, wait. :)

You CAN actually choose material, plating and tapers. It's very much like getting a new neck.

That's even worse! I thought bassoonists were too poor from buying their crappy-at-$10000 instruments to fool around with crazy bocals.

Ah, but you see with bassoons, the secret is to get a hot bocal to trick up your "crappy-got-it-cheap-on-Ebay" instrument.

I tried a couple of Yamaha Supers, but liked my Schrieber better. However, this Bell totally blows it away. I'm keeping my eyes open for another one. I may just get a pickup and install it in the Schrieber.

BELL bocals work great in the Schrieber, I used to use one when I played Schrieber. Tho' in my Moose'...its not the ticket :!:
Go for it Merlin. :)

Congrats on the new Bell bocal...I've tried a few but haven't taken the plunge. Very fine bocals. I did use a Moosemann bocal for a couple of years (it was a good match for my previous bassoon, an early Fox 201), but have been sticking w/ a Heckel VCD2 in recent years, along with a CD1 as a 'backup' for when the ensemble is playing a little on the high side. Any other Heckel bocal users out there?
