Late notice, I know!

The Merlin Williams Saxophone Quartet is performing at Gage Park in downtown Brampton, ON tonite, 7-9 p.m.

We're playing a mix of jazz, show tunes, classical and novelty tunes. (It IS a park concert after all!)

The quartet members are: Merlin Williams - soprano, Darryl Orr - alto, Andy Ballantyne - tenor, and Jeff Densham - baritone.

If you can make, please drop by the stage and say hi!

It WAS a really enjoyable gig.

At one point between numbers, I told the audience one of the cool things about a sax quartet is that you can play just about any kind of music. I casually mentioned that I was working on an arrangement of Mahler's Symphony #2 (The Symphony of a Thousand) for saxophone quartet. ONE guy in the audience starting laughing so hard I thought he was gonna have a heartichoke!

I was really pleased that one of my new arrangements worked really well. About half of the charts we played are things I've put together.

Great! Glad all went well.

As you may know, I've started a saxophone quartet a year ago. We just started doing public performance recently (2 so far) and I'm allways inclined to go see if I can or hear what other quartets are doing. We're not pros, just a bunch of "well accomplished amateur players" but we sound pretty darn decent (so we've been told) Anyway, it's been a fun journey so far.

Merlin - isn't it the 8th symphony that is the "Symphony of 1000" ???

Are you working on the 8th or 2nd?

Very ambitious choice either way!

In all seriousness...I did do the Landler from Mahler #1 for quartet...

I'd love to hear that. If you ever get a good recording of it, maybe you could post it on the "post your classical playing" thread?

(A friend of mine did a quartet arrangement of the first mvt. of Beethoven's Fifth. Worked surprisingly well...)
