I want the best clip on mic for a tenor. It does not need to be wireless. I don't want a body pack. I sing and am already wearing one pack for that, don't want another. Plus, the sax is used on 2 tunes per gig.
What do I want to buy?

My only experience is with the Sansom Airliner, which is wireless and sounds great. I am sure there are better wired mics which do not require a body pack.

I've heard good things about the ATM35 or the cheaper Pro35Xm, the AKGC419 is quite good, I know Bootman is using it on steel drum right now with plans to use it for the sax as well.
I have a AT lavalier mic, the same guts as the ATM35 or Pro35 (not sure) and have wired up a clip for it and it sounded great. I have plans to get the clip mount. I actually ordered it, but it was back ordered and then the price jumped by like 45% so I cancelled with that vendor.

I was reading the "Best sax Mic" thread here. A few people were saying the AKG mics sounded thin and "boxy"". Is this the c419, or only the wireless setup?
ive used the audio thecnica at 35. they are good. i just bought a shure beta 98 hc . i think i like the shure beta a little more than the atm 35. they are both real good though.

get an SD Systems clip on mic. They are way better than anything else on the market.

You can argue Shure or AT for ever. They are both great and do have a different sound. Just check them out and let your ears make the call.
I use the AT and have many posts up singing its praises. It works for me - wired and wireless.

I've used the AKG C419 for several years now and have found that the Boxy aspect of it is easily overcome by proper placement of the microphone. Placing it directly over the centre of the bell and very close will cause a certain boxiness to the tone. Better placement is as such. Imagine a piece of paper spread over the bell with a target in the middle. Place the mic about 3 or 4 inches above that target and maybe slightly off centre. You'll get a good even tone from top to botton.
Any microphone has it's inherent problems. A good soundman always help aleviate these difficulties.
Another thing I like about the C419 is that it's not that expensive. These small microphones tend to have a shelf life. The wireing leading to the mic is very small and can break inside of it's casing and the diaphram is also tiny. Such a small diaphram can wear over the years. I don't think any clip-on has the durability of a regular mic, so I want one I can afford to replace if it goes in a few years.

:D Well, I just tried out my new Samson Airline wireless mike last night on a 4 hour blues club gig. It performed flawlessly and my tone was virually indistinguishable from the SM 57 I usually use. It didn't take long to learn how to play softer- as opposed to backing away from a stationary mike- and it was lots of fun being able to step out during a solo, walk the bar and even dance with the girl who had no partner while I was soloing. I am very happy with this unit. Honeyboy

I got the Shure beta and like it very much. My good friend Scott, a pro soundman, musician and music store owner was completely floored. Excellent sound with almost no EQ.
Is this the beta 98 you're talking about?

I have heard a few comments that the C419 has a boxy sound. Has anyone ever tried the D409 which is dynamic rather than condenser and should theoretically have a warmer sound?
