So, the more I play my SX90R tenor, the more I'm amazed at how great the intonation is. I've always played Yamahas, and thought they were as good as you could get pitch wise, but this horn is fantastic. And it doesn't seem to matter what kind of mpc I try, they are all spot on. My alto should be here from Stephan this week, and I was wondering about the SX90II sopranos. Sops, in general, get a bad rap for intonation, but is the JK soprano's scale comparable to the alto and tenor?

I have play tested one and the intonation seemd fine, but there again so it is on my Yanagisawa. The JK sopranos are nice horns and I keep meaning to spend a bit more time trying one. I think modern pro level sopranos have good intonation, but as you are working with a short tube, epecially on the palm key notes, it is extremely sensitive to mouthpiece placement, and technique, so you have to spend time working with it. Clarinettists seem to 'get it' pretty quickly, probably because its in a similar register and the mouthpiece is quite small.

I tried many sopranos at the NAMM show this year and usually love Yamaha and Yani's, but for me, the best sop, hands down, was the Keilwerth. Big, rich, and round tone and wonderful keywork.

Keilwerth for me. Don't rule out the one piece SX90 either.

Keilwerth makes a very fine soprano with good intonation by my ear. While I play a Selmer, I did spend an evening with Nick Brignola a couple years back, where he was very strong in his support for the Keilwerth horns and played his Keilwerth soprano for a whole set to give a good feel for its sound. He wrote me later that he was playing only Keilwerths.

First thing I noticed when I got my SX90II was that I was in tune. My god I nearly kissed the ground. I have more trouble with tenor.
