Yamaha conducted a master's clinic in Seattle this week. The master was Phil and he still has it. He plays a Yamaha 82Z Custom with a non lacquer finish. He still uses a New York Meyer 5 and now uses the Vandoran ZZ reeds. He said he tried his ol' Mark VI that he hand selected at the factory in France but that the Z does it for him now. http://www.philwoods.com

Eric Kloss happened to show up to (that's how I got my invite) and he is playing a Yamaha 875 EX with a Lakey mouthpiece (reportedly the same mouthpiece as Jamey Aebersold). He still has it too and got a standing ovation. As I looked around the room of sax players and wannabes (like me) I saw nothing but smiles. Kloss should have his Web site back up by the end of the month.

After the show, I let Eric try my 82Z (got in Australia 'cuz you couldn't get them in the states yet). He played if for about ten minutes and decided he wanted to get one. He demonstrated a phenominal circular breathing combined with a sonic boom sound method that I am hard-pressed to explain. He did things on my sax that I didn't know could be done.

I'm never gonna wash my sax again.

If Morry played my sax I wouldn't wash it either.
