Hi Dave!

Say, I caught the end of a jazz program on a cable channel that caught my attention. It was a Bix Jazz Festival or something like that. I'm not sure where it was held; but, it may have been in Iowa. The group I heard was called Natural Gas. The soprano player was quite good. Sadly, the names of the individual players were not given at the end of the program. I was just curious if you know anything about this trad jazz group. If so, do you know the name of the soprano player?

Thanks, Roger

Roger: . . . Bob Murphy.

Known him for years, too. He is an attorney in the Bay Area. For years I played in bands at festivals (Sacramento, Pismo Beach, Three Rivers, San Diego, Helena, Great Falls, etc.) on the same bill as Natural Gas. We've each sat in the audience as the other played and studied each other's playing. E-mail me (jazzdolson@attbi.com) for further discussion.

The group itself has been around for many years. They play the West Coast Revival style of Lu Watters and Turk Murphy (no relation that I know of) and have been very popular in the Dixieland/Trad scene. They have many recordings - try Stomp Off Records - I think they have been one of the distributors. DAVE
