I just got a hand-me -down sax from my brother-in-law, for my son to play on. We are trying to find out a bit about it. The only markings are Cracin (not sure, it's an unusual old-english type font) with the Serial # of 421XX

I'm fairly sure it's not a big name (more like a Conn 'student' horn) but I WOULD like to know about the manufacturer, and the year it was made. can ANYONE help?

Thank you!

I never heard of Cracin or Tratin. Any insight from BIL regarding when the horn was bought? A picture would be helpful. Are the toneholes on the bell on the left or right?

Ok, talked to BIL, he got it used in the early 60's, so it must have been made in the 50's. The tone holes (assuming they're the big ones on the bell..I play trombone!) as you look down (as if playing) are on the right side. there are little mother-of-pearl on the keys..

The writing is actually 'The "Cragin" Alto, Paris France'

I hope this helps. I cannot yet post attachments, but I do have pictures that I'll try to post as soon as I can. Thanks!

I took a look at the pictures you sent and your horn looks like it was made by Dolnet. They have bell guards that are very distinctive and sort of art deco looking. It is a French made professional level horn with tone very similar to Selmers of the same era. This is a food thing! With a good overhaul this can be an excellent horn. Ergonomics are not quite up to modern standards particularly for the left pinkie keys. Those keys look just like SML which is another outstanding French sax.
