I took my first lesson from a new teacher today. His name is Chip, he played under Jim henderson for I think 2 years. He's a pretty knowledgeable guy. He really concentrated on theory and stated that that's what we will mainly be doing. That's exactly what I wanted. I am a firm believer in once you have the theory down then you have the building blocks of music that you can take with you to any instrument. I want to really know how music relates with itself. He emphasized knowing the scales, we went over intervals, the 7 different modes. It was a lot of information to digest, but I have 2 weeks before my next lesson. I am actually paying for an hour lesson and it is alot better than 30 minutes. with the half hour lesson it seems like as soon as you sit down it's time to go and you are left just sitting there like, "that's it?" At the end of this lesson I actually felt a lot was accomplished. He is very challenging and really makes me think on the spot. I think I will stick with this guy for awhile, until I'm able to stand on my own 2 feet :).

Sounds really good Joel,

I got lucky in that the best tenor and alto jazz player (IMHO of course) in our area lives in my neighbourhood, and he's a great teacher. He gives me a good mix of music theory (mostly goes over my head at first, but then sticks later), playing tunes and improvising.

Anyway, sounds like you are on your way, Can't wait to hear some of the results.
