I will like to some opions on the use of the jaw vibrato vs using air (diaphram) vibrato. Myself, when I use vibrato, I use the jaw (ya ya ya ya etc.) This is what I was trained to do when I was studing saxophone and major in music 25 odd years ago. However, I have notice that I have been hearing some air vibrato than jaw vibrato in performances in pop music and "smooth" jazz.

Is the two ways to create a vibrato being taught now?
And what is your feelings about use of one and the other?

Thanks

The jaw vibrato has been the mainstream method for saxophone vibrato for many, many years. It seems the only people who use the "diaphragm" vibrato on saxophone are those who have come over from other instruments, such as flute.

The jaw vibrato has much more control, and can be applied even at very soft dynamic levels. Also, the jaw vibrato changes pitch, timbre, and volume. The diaphargm vibrato changes only volume, and is not as rich sounding as the jaw vibrato.

I know of no university level teachers teaching the diaphragm method of vibrato.
