What do people think of the Yamaha Z series? I heard Phil Woods was sponsoring it. Opinions? Also, when does the Selmer reference Alto come out?

I would take the Z to any of the newer Selmers. They have been lacking. I, personally, like the Oleg Saxes.

I was pretty impressed with the Z. It was very even and precise. It felt very restrictive for me, but I only played the tenor. The alto could be diffirent. The tenor felt like I put a rubber mouthpiece on there. It actually felt like I put a Morgan on. It was very even, just too controlled, and not quite flexible enough for me. It honestly felt more like a legit player's horn.
Nice horn, just not for me. If you like the way it feels, your golden, because the workmanship is not in question.

What did you put on the Z? Just a question, to see how well the Z controls. You see, i'm very curious about the Z.

I put my Vandoren V16 T55(metal) on. I would have to change something, most likely reed type or strenght to play that horn......possibly a bigger mouthpiece.

Tried the Z alto. Not too impressed. It's nothing too different from the old Customs. Phil Woods sponsors the Custom Z and the new Vandoren ZZ reeds too. He probably gets everything for free.

I had the same sentiments when I tried the Custom Z alto: not too different from the old Custom. That to me is what makes the 62II a compelling horn since it's a different beast altogether, and it's much less expensive.
