Ahwwk :dazed:
There seem to be an awful lot of polls cropping up since we migrated to the new board. Should we limit their number? You tell me and Saxpics. :argue:

I'm fine with polls, as long as the subject matter isn't anything to do with:
1. Kenny G
2. Whether there are too many/too few polls.

Ditto.

Other than the ones I'm creating, I'd assume ... :)
IMHO, when we moved to vBulletin, some SOTW members said, "Oooh! New features!" and immeaditely began (over) using them.
I think that this phenomenon will pass in a few weeks.
==========
One thing I can say is that conversion software doesn't like polls. When we moved from phpBB to vBulletin, we lost 14 polls in the process -- and vBulletin's conversion software is pretty darn powerful. I can imagine that we'd have the same problem if we have to convert to a different software package in the future (at the very least, we're upgrading to newer versions of vBulletin as they come out).
So, my recommendation is not to overuse the poll thing.
Also, IMHO, I think polls are relatively lame and I tend not to vote in them. Yes, they have a definite place, especially when we administrators are asking you what feature you want, but -- no offense intended -- I really don't care how many of y'all prefer Kenny G to John Coltrane (or whatever).
However, I understand that polls can be fun and I'm not gonna rain on anyone's parade.
Anyhow, if you're wondering, yes, polling can be turned off. I'm also not sure, but I also think that polls can be approved by administrators and/or only administrators could post 'em.

No, but alliteration seems to be.

Alliteration almost always allows amusing anecdotes.

The problem with polls is that it doesn't leave room for answers that don't fit into the polster's predetermined questions.
I know it is a way to collect info in order to determine whether a majority of those polled would want a proposed change.
These "who are you/where are you from/what do you do/why are you here/how do you do/what is the best/etc/and on and on" polls are aggravating and useless and I refuse to participate in any but the ones that will be used to improve the board. It should be mandantory to have a vote that says "This poll SUCKS" so that we who don't like it can voice our real feelings.
< Major Snippage >It should be mandantory to have a vote that says "This poll SUCKS" so that we who don't like it can voice our real feelings.
Actually one of the reasons I've posted in my recent polls the choice, "saxpics shouldn't be allowed to do polls" (or variations thereof) is because of a habit I've picked up from one of the other Forums I post at: include this statement in your poll. If it gets WAY too many hits, you probably shoudn't be doing polls.
It's also a little less "in your face" than, "This poll sucks."
(If you are wondering, though, I don't have a setting that says, "Make this poll option mandatory.")
It IS possible for me to take away the ability for anyone or an entire group of folks to post polls. As said, I really don't think it's a problem or will become a problem. At the very least, I have yet to see an e-mail from someone that says something like, "Old Charlie's posting too many polls. They're annoying. Make him stop."
Remember, if a poster's really that annoying and you don't want to contact an Admin (it's really easy now; just click on the http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/images/buttons/report.gif in the user's post), add him to your ignore list (http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/profile.php?do=editlist). No, you can't ignore Admins, no matter how many polls they post :).
EDIT: ... and I keep forgetting: if the poster's just posted something that's content-less, click his Reputation and take him down a couple points.
