View Full Version : Avatars
You may have already seen them around.
I made a serie of avatars featuring my sax-cartoon characters. All of them are 60x60 pixels and are free for everyone to use.
You can get them here (http://www.kimcpelletier.com/)
There are lots of choices to suit your personality like talkative alto : http://www3.sympatico.ca/musimage/sotwavatars/talkativealto1.jpg
To suit your emotional state like this tenor in shock: http://www3.sympatico.ca/musimage/sotwavatars/tenorinshock2.jpg or a reed begging for mercy.
You can proudly exhibit your mental age as the baby saxophone suggests.
You can also show everyone how disruptively deranged you are (or wish to be) with the tenor holding a spatula: http://www3.sympatico.ca/musimage/sotwavatars/tenorwithspatula1.jpg
or for the really bizzar ones, there is even a broccoli available.
And of course there are some for the normal people too.
There are 3 versions available for most avatars (different background color)
If there is a cartoon character that’s not there and that you would like to have for avatar, you can always ask me but keep checking often as I will add more avatars to the list in my free time.
Please note that for some reason vBulletin won’t allow to link the avatars directly from the location provided above. I think that’s because it’s a “www3” URL (others using the Canadian Sympatico providers and who have www2 & www3 URLs might have the same problem)
– So what you need to do is:
1) right-click on the avatar of your choice
2) Save it into your computer (remember where you saved it)
3) Upload the avatar on your sever and link from there.

When I go into my profile and select 'edit avitar' I only get one choice and that is 'do not use avitars' Is there some way to change that so I can use an avitar?

Ditto - I have the same issue. I wanna be somebody! :doubt:
This is strange apparently avatars have been turned-on for everybody.
Well anyway, to turn avatars on you must go to: User CP> Edit Options and make sure "Show Avatars" is checked in the "Thread Display Options" field box.
Note that avatars are different than the Profile Pictures - Profile Pictures have been disabled.
To Edit Avatar : User CP> Edit Avatars
Check the "Custom Avatar" box and enter the avatars URL in the field box that says "Enter Avatar URL"
You CANNOT upload an avatar from your computer, this function has been dissabled.
You must upload the avatar on your webspace and provide its respective URL.
For more information on avatars and vBulletin features please see : The New vBulletin Forum: Q&A (http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/announcement.php?f=130)
I hope this helps you guys. :)

Works great now!
Thanks!
Fixed. Give it a shot.
I tested it with a lowly user account, rather than my high-powered Admin account and it worked fine.
Again, Kim's absolutely right: you can't upload avatars. The box is there, but it allows you to only upload 0 bytes. That's a mite small for most folks.
EDIT: Sorry for the small size, folks, but bigger ones make threads a bit unreadable. If someone has the time and inclination, come up with a better vBulletin skin (theme) that allows you to put avatars on the side and I'll consider making that the default.
or for the really bizzar ones, there is even a broccoli available.
You knew I had to change my avatar when you said that, didn't you? :)
EXCELLENT work, Kim!

No, actually I didn't think about that at all. Either way, both the sax with spatula and the broccoli fit you well... Not that I think you're a vegetable or anything like that. Just that, I dunno it somehow fits you :)

You might check with the mods at Global Affairs. I know they're a version behind you, but their skin looks good, and might work for you. http://www.globalaffairs.org/forum/index.php?

It's the Aria skin from http://www.vbstyles.com. It's also $30. If you want it, post in the format suggested at http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=21182 !

Took a while to find a suitable picture that was the right size, but I think it was worth the search. In case you hadn't noticed I'm a huge Rahsaan fan.

I should note that if your image is copyrighted -- like all Kim's are -- or trademarked, make sure you have permission to use it before you post it.

Those avatars are a really good idea. Kim, you're extremely talented.

I can go for that. Heck, I'll even reduce that to $1 a point if you want 10,000 points.
:)
Ha! What are you complaining about? It's not fair, us moderators have got super-duper big time ratings automatically. At least you guys can work your way up and trully be able to say that you've earned it. That's were all the fun resides into methinks. :D
Glad so many of you enjoy the avatars. I'll try to come-up with some new ones pretty soon.

I'm sure you'll see her numbers increase and mine decline significantly when she finds the function on the Admin Control Panel and realizes she can edit my reputation points :).

Ok, I'm trying to add an avatar but having some trouble. I've posted the image on a website but I keep getting a meesage that the image is too large. Strange as it's only 76X71 pixels. Is there a limit on image size or something?
The maximum size is 60 (height) x100 (width) pixels

 I been avatar'd!!!!!
Honestly, who picked it? It's my fave pic too, I just don't remember ever selecting one.
Also, how come one day I'm a "Posting Marvel" and the next I'm a "Musician, Teacher, Artist, Writer, Scientist?" I am not a scientist. I upset Bunsen burners and counting fruit fly eyes makes my skin crawl. I did get a BS in college, but for entirely different reasons.

Okay, I'll fess up. I've been trying to populate the long-time members with nifty handles and if I really respect them, avatars. I try to find info on any Web sites you point to. In your case I think you talked about creating custom mouthpieces. That's either alchemy or science to me. I'll adjust your custom title line. 8-)
By the way, I did send you a PM (private mail) to this effect. :bom:

Your demand is my wish ... or something like that.
I will discuss with the troops later, primarily because I thought there was a problem with the permissions on the "Registered Users" group (which y'all are in), but IMHO, you need to EARN your title, above and beyond the Forum defaults for posting a certian #, that is.
I'm a member of a techie forum and we have something called a "Zot!ting Thread". This is where we nominate other people for specific titles. For instance, I related a story where I was electrocuted where I worked (faulty wiring, not faulty tech -- I was merely plugging in a power strip) and I got the title of "Burning Man" (translated).
Just my opinion.

< Quoting Gandalfe > Make that some long-time users. Gandalfe only did a couple. I did a few -- The SOTW Columnists, all the SOTW Administrators. Super 20 Player, because he asked nicely.
As I mentioned, I, myself, am not going to hand out any member-requested titles and the automatic title system is off.

04-15-2005, 08:15 PM
Hmm... this has become the tar baby issue of the month for SOTW. I, like Bill, lament that three or so people's complaints could result in custom titles and the rep system being turned off for all the approaching 10,000 members who had no complaint or comment.
That said, it is two less thangs to moderate. ;)

Um, the double entendre was never intended. Thanks for clearing that up Pete. ;)
I was under the impression that custom titles are still happening?!? I see folks who still have them. Pretty cool- and no big deal. It was the silly default titles based on number of posts (redundant) that people had issues with -and was removed, in my understanding.
When I last checked the poll on the rating system, a vast majority of 8 people had voted for the rating system and a minority of 6 'complainers' had voted against it. The poll ran for a whole flippin' day. Obviously, in a forum with "...approaching 10,000 members..." neither the 6 votes against nor the 8 votes for could represent anything approaching a majority. It looks to me like someone just decided it wasn't even worth debate...
I listed 4 or 5 areas of possible concern with the system and voted against it. The final one was that it would be a waste of our moderators time. Even said I was playing devil's advocate  . Heck, I'll argue the sky is chartreuse until you agree with me, and then I'll say - no it's not, it's blue...
I was asked my opinion and gave it -you disagree with the opinion I provided. No problem -free country, pretty free forum (compared to one I won't name -headed by a freaked out despot).
If you don't want to hear my opinion -THEN DON'T ASK FOR IT :protest: .
If you disagreed with my concerns then address them in the thread where they were posted 8-) .
Coming here and broadstroking me and other forum members with the label of 'a few complainers' just isn't cricket in my book - particularly for a forum moderator. I thought trolls were supposed to do it to your face :) (tell the big man Grumps we missed him at the Md. get-together).
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THIS AS A RANT!!! Even though it reads like one - it ain't. It's just me expressing an unsolicited opinion, and we all know what they say about opinions... yep, and everyone else's stinks -while our own smells like a rose :yikes!:!
Now Sambo -on to that 'tar baby' remark..... :D

Well, no, I don't think he does. I am one of those who are being "blamed" for cancelling out the fun and games other wish to play and I am, frankly, a bit disappointed with the reaction.
Like it was said, I gave my opinion which I thought was appropriate and whatever reaction there was to that opinion is out of my hands. "I" did not cancel out anything on this forum and I do not like being blamed for it. Nor did I lock a thread in anger because it was not going my way.
Let's have a little balance to this topic and not exaggerate just how many were for or against these new items, nor place blame for their demise on those who do not control what is formatted or not.
Actually, if anyone is the cause for "cancelling" the features, it's the posters that said:
Hey, if you (saxpics) think that implementing these new features is going to be too time consuming, why bother? It has been too time consuming. < nice cathartic statement deleted >
(BTB, Gary's a very nice guy. Good poster. Leave him be, OK?)
I had said that the User Reputation System had been voted on in the older phpBB Forums and a majority liked it, we just didn't have the ability to install it at that time. I decided I could re-poll it anyhow and the percentage that liked it was still high.
I also said that the "custom" user title/Zot! idea had been polled and the majority agreed that we should do it -- I also think three of five Administrators even said yes, with two abstaining. There were also people who posted in the thread that they liked it and didn't vote.
ANYHOW, when I started the Zot! thread and I started hearing from users that they had a problem with it, I had decided I had enough.
I'm going to try to put this so if you have even seen that thread before it was deleted, it'll sound sorta generic:
* One of the people that complained complained not that other people might be offended by titles (I had made sure titlees wouldn't be), but that he'd be offended for other people.
* One of the comments was that someone was offended by the User Reputation system because his reputation, that had been high, had started taking a nose-dive in the past day or two.
* One comment was that the title and ratings system were offensive, in general.
Someone later commented to me: if the system is working for you, hey, you're happy. If it's not, you complain.
That's just not worth it to me. I don't have the time and I don't want to expend the effort.
This topic is at an end. Thank you.
