Well after saying for years that I would like to learn to play the Sax, my wife bought me one on Saturday.
So I have been learning to play now for the huge sum of 3 days. My mouth muscles ache (I am only practising about 30 mins a day at the moment), I can make all these wonderful noises that sound terrible but I am loving every minute of it.
I have my first lesson on Friday and can't wait. I have a few books on the way including the Art of the Saxohphone so am looking forward to reading them.
A tip for motivation. Pose with you sax in front of the mirror. Damn it's a beautiful instrument (the sax that is :D ).

Anyway I am looking forward to getting to know the people in this forum, and no doubt will be asking for advice on breathing, tounging, embouchure, the whole works.
I intend to be playing the Sax for a long time

Welcome to the forum and to the sax.

I only have 6 weeks experience myself. I know what you mean about the excitement. :D I can't keep the grin off my face. I even look forward to my lesson each week.

What is helping me the most is a teacher. The next thing is as much practice as I can get. I'm up to about an hour a day and my embouchure gives out at about 90 minutes now.

For now, if you haven't found it yet, try
www.saxlessons.com

Not only does he have examples, but he also has sound bites you can listen to and play along with.

Good luck and keep coming back. :)

Nice to meet you both and Old Charlie thanks for that site. I will have a good look through.

I have a target and that is to be able to play Bakers Street. At the moment I am focusing on my embouchure and tounging. I want to take things steadily and avoiding picking up any bad habits. I think it's best to get a good grounding. Luckily i can read music as I used to play the keyboard and have also been a drummer in a marching band so have good rythmn.
Now just to get my mouth muscles strengthened.

Locutus -

Welcome aboard! Great to have another beginner on the forum!

Baker Street - ah what a great intro/solo!! That's also on my list (along with about a hundred other tunes!)

You'll make lots of progress with a teacher, and practice, practice, practice - that's the easiest way to Baker Street, and will also get rid of the "terrible sounding noises" you've been making.

Good luck - hope to see you around.
