Needed a new Picc after a recent loss of my trusty old Armstrong.I pushed the button on a new Gem 4S..don't have it yet but I'd dig any owner opinions on this tiny sterling axe. THANKS

Yeah it looks like a good one, geminhardt makes great woods, but i hear their metals arent bad either. i would go anywhere but the geminhardt website though, because of course theyre going to tell you its the best piccolo ever! Nice brochures to look at though there so i would check it out. http://gemeinhardt.com/products/piccolosSilver.html

I worked for Gemeinhardt in the 70s and I can say that their pics are the best (maybe only) thing they have! The 4S has the advantage of having a silver body and all of the G's are conical which makes them rare as I think Haynes is the only other maker of conical metal pics. I good used one should run about $200-300. If it was made before about 1973, it may be sterling silver as later ones are coin silver, but still pretty good.

The bodies should still be coins silver and the riser may be copper.

My Selmer flute is stamped coin silver, the 4S ads say Sterling silver head and body.

It probably should be "Solid Silver" which usually indicates coin. It really is not an issue however as coin is used because it is easier to draw and a few cents cheaper. They silver plate over the entire body anyway so that the ribs and post get plated so any worry about tarnishing (the coin tarnishs easier) should not be a problem.

From http://www.barkingrock.com/catalogd.htm
"Coin silver is a silver alloy, usually made with copper or zinc. US coin silver (found in US coins prior to 1965) is usually 90% silver. Foreign coin silver ranges from 50% silver to sterling. ..."
