View Full Version : Something wrong with new Selmer C* mpc?

This is probably a dumb question, but I thought it was worth asking just the same. I don't have another lesson until next week so I can't ask my teacher until then.

I am a "late bloomer" beginner on alto and I have been taking lessons since late October. I had been using the stock plastic Keilwerth mpc and Vandoren 2.5 reeds, and things were going along pretty well. I just ordered a new Selmer C* mpc and ligature, and have received it since my last lesson in early December. I've been trying to practive with the new mpc, but it seems so much harder to blow and the reed/rail contact point is so much lower on the mpc that I have to take much more of it in my mouth for a full sound ( and it makes my jaws hurt). Also, the hole in the mpc where it goes on the neck is much smaller and this makes it more difficult to put onto the neck, and pinches the cork much more. Are these things normal, or is there possible something wrong? I had been led to believe that the C* would be easier to blow, and it appears to be exactly the opposite. I also have to use much softer reeds (1.5) to get a sound that is even close to the old mpc. I will of course have my teacher take a look at it next week, but so far it is very disappointing. I think I will go back to the old mpc and reeds until then.

Hi Danny, I am a late bloomer aswell 45 year old. And I started in bgin November. I bought a very very good sax: Yanagisawa 901 alt. I changed the mpc for a Selmer C*. With a reed 2 VanDoren I have to make quit a effort to blow the right tones. But with the reed Rico Jazz 2 , I blow good tones and I can practise for 1,5 hour without muscle pain around my mouth, which i have with the VanDoren2. It is just a matter of training your muscles. In within a year we will laugh about this and we can look for different combi of mpc and reeds.
Succes.
Johan

As a late bloomer at it for a while now I have to say I never liked the selmer C's I found their sheer size frustrating. its like taking a fist in your mouth. Have your teacher try it. If you dont end up using it you can get a very nice sound and a more comfortable mpc (IMHO) with a meyer. Its a good all around piece and comes in openings easy for beginners.

My late bloomer students never seem to have problems with Meyers, Morgans, and Otto Link plubber (plastic/rubber) pieces. They also seem to appreciate size 5 to 6. And the prices are very reasonable.

Leave the exotics to the pros.

I wouldn't think a Selmer C* is an exotic. I have gone back to my Keilwerth plastic mpc until my next lesson, and it does seem to be much easier to play. I'll see what my teacher says next week.

Mystery solved! :D My teacher tried my new C* mouthpiece and immediately saw that it didn't play right; he got the same airy sound (not a tone, just air) that I had been getting unless he blew really hard. I tried an old C* mpc out of his bin (he has a lot) and the improvement was HUGE! It actually did play smooth and easy like I had been told that it would. He then let me try his personal-use C* and it was amazing. I didn't realize that there could be so much difference in mouthpieces of the same make and model. I am definitely going to send this one back; I'm sending the dealer an email tonight. Thanks to all who tried to help!
