Does anybody know of any sax players may not have started playing sax at age 11, but can hold their own at a jam session to inspire those of us who feel discouraged because we had a late start?

Hold your own at a jam session? Judging from the ones I've been too, it wouldn't be hard. Playing pro, I know of several people who took up the sax later in life that are playing in bands. People who are at the top of the line? No, but on the other hand there all all kinds of players who started in grade five that nobody has heard of, and I'll bet they still enjoy playing.

Hey AtreyuGirl, Don't be discouraged! 17 or so isn't really a late start. My advice is to listen, listen, listen. to a lot of jazz; old stuff, new stuff, stuff you don't like all that much, stuff you don't understand all that well. and of course practice. And look for a jam session with players who want to see you do well. Where you can sit in and play and listen and learn. A jam where the players are encouraging...

Atreyu,

It's never too late. There are plenty of great players who started later.

I take a jazz harmony course from a jazz guitarist who discovered jazz, and began to play seriously at the age of 17. he is now around 40, and is one of the top bebop guitarists playing today. (check him out on the web Roni Ben-Hur)

If you were to decide today to begin a 4 hour daily practice routine, I would bet that by the time you could legally hang out in a bar, you'd be good enough to play in one. It's not about time, it's about commitment.

I started at 16. The key is practicing and desire. www.kingperkoff.com
