What is a Contralto sax? Can anyone post any pictures? Or explain this sax to me? Thanks

TooSaxy: That's a new one on me. Could it be a Conn alto saxophone? Or, maybe a mezzo-soprano, which was made by Conn in the '20's and pitched in F? DAVE

"Contralto" is a name coined by Jim Schmidt, who hand produces what is basically a C -melody horn.

Randall: Thanks for that. I've learned something new . . . this thing looks like it answers a question that was never asked . . . fills a void where no void existed, etc., etc. I went to Sanger once - that is the LAST place I'd suspect to find a "contralto". DAVE

Jims horns really grabbed my attention. I am impressed with his ideas and the craftmansship he has put into the horns.
I just wish I were rich enough to give it a try.... :shock:

Theres a such thing as a contraalto clarinet, which has a range between bass and contrabass.

Yes, but not by very much. Only a fifth.

The contralto sax, though, does look spiffy.

If you use the clarinet names, a contra-alto would basically be a Bari!

Just trust me, the contra alto clarinet sounds LOW, even when compared to a bass clarinet.

the contralto clarinet (in Eb) goes as low as a Bass Sax. lowest Concert Bb is Tuba-range.

Are you talking about low C or Eb variations of the EEb contra?

well, the concert Bb that I use when i'm playing is (no octave key) 3 fingers and thumb on top, and 3 fingers on the bottom hand, and it's a Tuba Bb. on the one I use, this is the lowest Bb. if there's anotehr version that goes lower then well, that's a fun note. i can get that on Tuba too, but it takes a LOT of air.
