Hi everyone.
I used to play the tenor in High School (yamaha-I wish I could remember what model it was) for a few yrs. Progressed thru the basics joined the band in my senior year.
it's been 10 years now since i've touched a horn, and want to get back into it.
i would like to get an alto (found a bunch on ebay, actually).
what do you guys/gals recommend.
my goal is to eventually get to the point where i can play duets with guitars (modern stuff).
thank you all in advance
Pete

Is your budget unlimited? Are you an intermediate player? Feel free to give us some more information.

I'm hardly an expert, but I've had experience with low-end Yamaha and Yanagisawa tenors. As a total beginner I bought a new Yamaha YTS23 student horn on the basis of its reputation. I wish I hadn't. My particular model had serious intonation problems. It also had a mediocre tone and clumsy key action. After two years of frustration I gave it away and bought a Yani T901. I chose the Yani after trying a friend's T901. I really like the key action action and tone. Plus it had a price I could afford.

I've tried a friend's Yani A992 alto. Plays easily and sounds terrific. The 992 is a step up from the 901. It has a bronze neck which everybody says is great--but I don't know why.

Anyway, you'll certainly want to consider Yanagisawa horns in your quest for an alto.
