I've mainly been an alto player, but have recently have been getting into tenor.
Didn't have him in my CD collection before, but this week I picked up two Dexter Gordon albums, "A Swinging Affair" and "Go".
Been alternating between both in my car CD player. Great stuff.

Lately I'm listening to "Saxophone Colossus" by Sonny Rollins ( I think i'll never stop listening to that CD) and "Only The Blues" by Sonny Stitt which is a great CD, The only problem is the quality og the recording..

quite a variety at the moment.
sly stone, duke ellington circa 1940-42, son house (got this today - 'father of folk blues': beutiful, dark, hypnotic blues), joe bataan (1960's latin soul), and all seasoned with a hint of arthur edward pepper.

In one car, the Eagles' classic "The Long Run." In the other, Alannis Morissette's fabulous "Jagged Little Pill." In the living room it's "Hot Rocks," a Stones compilation. In the bedroom, Bruckner's Symphony No.8, a magically recorded (Denon) and very powerful if occasionally somewhat ragged performance by the NHK under von Matacic. And in the studio, a collection of mostly Sousa marches by some British military band (I like to play along). These have all seen air time in the last 36 hours.
OK, not your typical saxer's line-up, but variety is the spice, as they say!

Lots of different sax stuff but 2 in particular. The Brecker Brothers Volume I and "Taking Off" by David Sanborn. I'm playing Alto and Tenor and singing lead vocals in a 4 piece rock band. If I listen to "Some Skunk Funk" and "Butterfat" just before rehearsal it seems to really inspire me. Every time I listen to Michael Brecker's solo on Skunk Funk it reminds me how much I really need to practice.
Tutu Jones - Blue Texas Soul (with the Memphis Horns)

Jeff Foster:
How good is the bass player in your band  ?
If you like Sanborn on "Butterfat", check out "Come On Come Over" on Jaco Pastorius' debut album. Second track. Just as your head is spinning after Jaco's rendition of "Donna Lee", Sanborn blows a sweet solo and is in the horn section, along with Brecker.
Enjoy,

Our Bass player is excellent but he ain't Jaco. I've got the album you mention but haven't listened to it in a long time. I need to go back and check that out. Thanks.
I suggest "Swinging the Loop" with Vito Pizzo playing great jazz Tenor.
He's backed by some of the old Count Basie Rhythm Section.
Vito hails from California and he's a swinging, great sounding tenor man.

Been getting back into Giant Steps a lot these past few days. Of course, I'm being subjected to heavy doses of Weather Report by my bass player, as well as a steady diet of the Flecktones and Victor Wooten. Sometimes, just to get away from it all, I turn to Ben Folds.

Kind of Blue, Coltrane 4 disc Boxset and A Love Supreme, Ken Burns Jazz: Charlie Parker, New Jersey Saxophone quartet, Jean-Yves Fourmeau Saxophone Quartet, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher, U2, Glazunov concertos, Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and other Mozart peices, and some really good compilation CD's of my own containing a bit of all of the above. The Aphex Twin is basically high melodic and progressive techno. It actually gives me some very good ideas for my jazz improvisations and classical compositions, oddly enough!

Now listening to Cannonball Adderly's "Them Dirty Blues". Great stuff. Has a recording of pianist Bobby Timmons' "Dat Dere". Has anyone heard Ricky Lee Jones' cover of that tune in the early 90's off "Pop Pop"? I think she got it straight from Cannonball and Nat's line.
"Wiggy" - Jerry Bergonzi, Dan Wall, Adam Nussbaum
I miss the B-3 players I used to work with...

Franks Wess and Foster are 2 greatly underappreciated tenor masters. Want a nice mellow sound to model on? These are two of the best! Thad Jones and Tommy Flannagan ain't bad either...
Charlie Rouse and Lee Konitz before that. I must believe Brew Moore: "Anybody that dosen't play like Prez is wrong." ( "Prez" = Lester Young for the youngsters out there...) :D

He is, but he has "retired" from public playing. I have REMEMBER ME on Steeplechase, which is a great record. It has a companion that I DON'T have called (I believe) WHAT'S GOIN' ON? Also have him with the Louis Hayes Group on an album I bought for under $2 years ago. Another fine record. I think my favorite appearance by FS (just for its novelty!) is on McCoy Tyner's TODAY AND TOMORROW. In addition to brothers Elvin and Thad, the album features John Gilmore and Frank Strozier. Now THAT is an odd cast!

Bryan Steel on tenor. Don't know much about him except that he does studio work (heard him on the soundtrack for movie, Riff) . Really like his sound and phrasing. Tone is like Breckers but alot easier technique wise to copy. Bob Malach is another good one for tone, lots of Brecker (out of the loop is one of my all time favs) . Basically stuff I hope to copy and then sneak in on my bar gigs when the drunk dancers aren't noticing. K

I listen to many different types of saxophonist and all for different reasons. Parker's Ornithology, honestly I have the entire Parker box set, being one of my favorites. The guy was just ridiculously fast though I think that everyone reading this knows one riff that he seemed to use in every recording... in sixteenth notes,
D#,E,G,B, D,B,C,C#, A,A#,B,A, G,F#,E,D, C#,E,G,Bb, A,F#,(GAG),F#, D,Bb,A,D
() indicates triplets. But enough tab...
I also listen to Sonny Rollin's Saxophone Colossus. I love Rollins endless improve and superb use of the overtone.
Paul Desmond's sound in the Dave Brubeck Quartet is probably to this day the lightest, most emotional, and coolest ever to grace the alto saxophone. (alto is my instrument of choice so I'm a little partial)
Finally, I think that Leroi Moore of the Dave Matthews Band is probably one of the most inovative of modern saxophonists. Of course I love the band as I feel they are one of the only groups pushing mainstream forward, but to me it's Roi's playing that steals the show. Not only bringing 4 types of saxophones to all of the concerts, but also a Bass Clarinet, C soprano flute, and D pennywhistle. I respect the man because not only is his playing great for DMB, but he was an accompished jazz musician first.
And finally, I hope to someday listen to everyone in this forum.

I second Tim's rave on "The Meters". Great funky bass lines. Look-Ka-Py-Py is a classic.
Aside from original soul/r&b material from this new band I am playing in (and trying to learn the horn parts) I am listening a lot to the Live in Brooklyn Groove Collective album. Saxophonist Jay Rodriguez's work is amazing. Check it out!

Oh yes!! Johnny Hodges. If you haven't heard him on Strayhorn's "Isfahan" from the Ellington Far East Suite, you have a supreme treat in store. Hodges could also seriously swing, as on "Things Ain't What They Used to Be", again with Ellington, but his tone on "Isfahan" is stunningly, hauntingly beautiful on one of the most evocative melodies ever written.

Right now I'm listening to "Goodnight Julia" on my computer. It's from the soundtrack of some TV show one of my friends watches and she heard it and told me I absolutely had to listen to it. It's the prettiest tenor solo I've ever heard, in fact makes me think that if I ever get serious about the tenor that's what I want to sound like. Other than that I've been hooked on "No name jive" by Glen Gray, Zoot's version of "Do Nothin till you hear from me" and Mulligan's "Georgia on my Mind." -SG 8-)

Stepping Around the Giant
Carl Grubbs
Some amazing music here- WORLD CLASS. At a point you'd say this guy IS a legend- he went out in the world and left a mark.
These tunes are great;
1. Stepping Around the Giant
2. Betty Jo and David
3. Sax Talk II
4. July
5. Sax Talk
6. Kai's Mood
7. Four
8. Two Fellas
One of the baddest players to come out of Philly.
What a special alto sound too8-)

Our bands demo :-) I haven't been able to take it out of the CD player.
At first it was shock because I thought it sounded so good. Then, I started to pick it apart for errors. Finally, I'm at the point that I can just enjoy it for what it is.

I've really be on Medeski, Martin, and Wood's "Tonic" album" for a couple days now... I didn't realize those guys did that kind of stuff. There's a couple of pretty heavy grooves in there!
