The JA Company (B & S is part of it) announced, that they are going to stop or to reduce the Medusa-production, due to the bad business situation.
The reasons for that? Perhaps it depends on the name. Selmer is a name, Yanagisawa a.s.o. Medusa saxes are quiet expensive and a lot of people want "a name" for the high price. B & S doesn't sell enough Medusa to balance their costs.

Well that is a true shame. These are wonderful horns, better than many of the other horns being made today. I hate to hear this news. Keep us posted, please.

This is sad. I just got my second Medusa - an alto to match my Medusa tenor. They are great horns. I suppose if no more are made that might increase the resale value.
Please send along a news link if you can so we can all see this in black and white.
Thanks

According to the USA distribution team for B&S, they have not heard anything of the sort.
However, I am having them get to the bottom of this. I also have a call in to JA Music North America as well.

Mmmmm....Very interesting....But not very funny.... (said with my best German accent) :D
I have my name down for first offer of refusal on a Lacquer Medusa bari. It is currently awaiting a neck...It's a long story....Anyways, when the neck comes in, I'll be play testing it.
This horn has been in this music store for over a year (sans neck) that I know about. I'm wondering, does anyone here know if there was only 1 model of Medusa made, or if they've already undergone some changes during their production run.
So what I'm asking is, is a Medusa from 2003 exactly the same as the Medusa produced today?

The Medusa model (series 2006) has not gone any changes since its inception other then some addition of engraving on the necks of the alto/tenor (not sure about the bari engraving).

Thanks Dave. One more question, does the series 2006 have necks stamped with the serial number of the horn it comes with? Will not having the stock neck affect price? (OK, it was 2 :?: s)
Thanks again...helen

A member of a German sax-forum mailed the company. That's what an "official" of JA Company wrote back:
"The present economic development didn’t spare B & S. Therefore the output of production of Medusa-saxophones is presently levelled to the falling demand. It’s not true that we terminated the production."
I had to translate that, hope it's clear enough.
So if you read between the lines...

Someone in Oregon just listed a B&S Medusa sandblast tenor if you're interested in grabbing a potential collector's item before they stop production.

It's not mine, I have a Medusa sandblast alto and can't afford to add a matching tenor for it.

Yup, thats me. I actually have 2 B&S tenors right now and I've decided to sell one of them. At one point I thought my father was going to take one, but that didn't work out. I'm really enjoying playing the Medusa horns.

I had a Guardala Earthtone, which is essentially the same horn.
One of the absolute finest horns I have ever owned. I later ended up selling to finance the SS Medusa purchase and even though I dearly love my sterling Medusa, I often regret selling the ET. It has a really special sound.
Tony, I hope it goes to a good home.
