How do produce a clean beginning on each note, especially in the upper register? How do I release each note without it sounding "dead"?

A clean, alive attack is dependent on a whole host of things which must be just right, including sufficient air pressure from the lungs, excellent embouchure (not just what you see, but also BETWEEN the lip, which controls much of the turbulence), airstream direction, embouchure hole coverage by lip, relaxation of lower lip around teeth, action of the tongue, minimising intrusion of tongue causing turbulence, non-intrusion of the teeth for the same reason, etc, etc.

Get at least a few lessons. These things can be picked up by an astute teacher in a few seconds by seeing you and listening. This is impossible in a forum situation where we can only guess at what you are doing wrong.

If you are a sax player doubling on flute, then the following MAY help.
