There's a "Rampone Quarno Novaro" alto on eBay, supposedly a family estate find. I was wondering whether there was an historical link to the Rampone & Cazzani factory.

I compared it to current R&C alto on the R&C website and there are sufficient similarities to suggest a link. Anyone see one of these before?

Rob: I think that "Quarno Novaro" may be a street name, town, or other location. The R&C saxophones I had came with paperwork indicating the company's address as being "28020 Quarna Sotto (VB), Casella Pastaie n 6, Italy". Quarno - Quarna? Could be wrong . . . DAVE

Quarna Sotto is the town in the north of Italy where Rampone & Cazzani laboratories are located. Novara was the capital city of the district until few years ago when Verbania (VB) became the new capital.

Thanks. So, is it possible this sax was made before the Cazzani family joined the Rampone family in making musical instruments? Or, were there some instruments without the Cazzani name added to the engraving? From the R&C site, I seem to remember that Cazzani was making watches when a Rampone family member married a Cazzani family member which caused the merger to take shape.

As I understand it, Cazzani linked up with the Rampone Company in 1912, which may or may not indicate that the alto is before that date; seems unlikely though.

I agree about the possible manufacture date being later than 1912. I'd say much later.

Hi there,
Don't know if you got the sax in the end, but my R&C alto has a serial number 7xxx and when I contacted the Mr Zolla (the fella running shop in italy at the mo) he told me that my sax was probably a 1940s model. By the look of the photos GOODSAX, and also of course by the order of the serial numbers your's looks to be a later model than mine! Furthermore on my R&C the bell keys are on the left side of the bell whilst on the R&C pictured the bell keys are on the right side.
Certainly in response to your original query I think the wording on ebay was based only on the bell's hand engraved writing and they probably didn't include all of the detail of the bell engraving. It is most likely that there was further engraving lower down that said A Rampone, GB Cazzani. I think most of the earlier R&Cs only had A Rampone prominently engraved along with the site of manufacture (my R&C has A Rampone, Milano engraved on the bell). So it is most probably a genuine R&C IMHO!
I hope this is proves helpful, CIAO! :D
