I'm new comer for Keilwerth horn. Unfortunately, the supply is very limit is my area (almost zero). I would like to know how you compare this:

1) Black Nickel
Keilwerth SX90R vs Guardala DG-5XXBN (500 or 501)

2) Keilwerth SX90R
Does the Black Nickel and Dark Gold Lacquer have any big difference in sound ?

Thanks.

I was almost decided on Keilwerth NS, but someone told me about Guardala horns. I am interested in Earthtone or New York Series. Does anyone have experiences with these horns? How do these horns sound compared to typical Keilwerth sound?

Thanks alot.

PS: I can't find any info on DG. Where can I buy one if I decide on this?

They aren't currently in production, but might be found at WW&BW or other retailers. If you are interested in them, you might want to try the B&S horns. Roland at www.elke.de can help you. They are both made by VMI, a German horn maker.

Still, don't give up on the JK. I can't say enough good things about my new SX90R tenor.

I never try a NY Series but have test a Guardala Earth-tone, Pro Artist, Pro Custom & a Keilwerth SX-90R side by side. All tenor.

Guardala Earth-tone
Frankly, many people are giving very good comment on the Earth-Tone, but it's sound too drive/Rock for me. Unless you only play Hard Rock music. If you like classic Jazz sound, I don't think you will like it in my opinion.

Guardala Pro Artist & Pro Custom (both are Black Nickel)
Almost effortless to play these horns, with plenty of resonance. Not bright but not too dark, exactly the right tone for me. You can get all kinds of sound you want - Classic Jazz, Contemporary Jazz, Fusion, R & B, ....Both horns has very similar sound but Pro custom is a little bit more hick in sound. It's very comfortable for small hand players. Frankly, I also compare it with Selmer Series II, III, Ref 54, 36 & a YTS-875 but I would say these black nickel sound better for me.

However, I also test a Guardala Pro Artist French Gold tenor before but it sounds not as good as the black nickel series. May be because of the Black Nickel plated material.

I don't think it's easy to get a brand new Guardala. If you can find, it should be produced at least 2, 3 yeas before. Still, some retail shop have stock. May be you check on the ebay.com for a used horn.

PS: I just saw several posts in ebay which has Guardala tenor.

Keilwerth SX-90R (black Nickel)
It sound a little bit close with Guardala black Nickel horn but I don't think it's ideal for small hand player. Also, it require better air support (personal feel, may be my skill is not good). Many small hand player don't feel comfortable it. If you have a bigger hand with better air support, may be it's good for you because more easy to get a new SX-90R.

If you can, just test it. Good Luck !
