I've tried one old bass that was repadded and in 'playing' order. It was a Triebert. It wasn't fun to play because at least half the notes were difficult to impossible to play. It's still for sale.

By the way, this one looks good to me, if I had the bucks:

Sold for $7650. That's a runaway steal for a Keilwerth. They're great horns - if they'd taken the trouble to add top E and F they'd be perfect. I don't know why they didn't, since they designed this bass pretty much from scratch, inspired by the Conn.

Yeah, this bass will be someone's treasure. I don't think we'll see it for sale again.

To me, the ergos are nearly as important as intonation. Anyone know what kind of bass sax James Carter plays? Is it a JK? He gets around on his well enough.

Last month I scored a silver-plated Buescher bass. It's in real nice shape, needing only a repad. I strapped it on and honked around until I looked in the mirror and couldn't play for laughing (the horn dwarfs me, yet somehow made me appear more manly). Anyway, the ergos are surprisingly good for such a big horn. I should have it back from the tech by the end of October. Can't wait!

I seem to remember that Beaugnier was founded around 1930, so that'll give you some timeframe.

I played a Conn New Wonder bass on occasion. The horn seemed to have been designed not to work properly with "standard" fingerings -- e.g., "Oh. You wanna play a :space3: ? All right, that's first finger on the left hand, the middle side key and the low F key."

However, I'm by far an expert on all things bass, but I have heard many stories like the above about older horns.

The most expensive vintage horn I've ever seen actually sell on eBay was a Conn 14M gold plated bass -- with high F. About $30K US, as listed on eBay AND then I was told that the bidding continued after the ad closed!

If I was going to buy a new bass, I think I might call up the folks at www.eppelsheim.com -- because their bass redesigns look kinda kewl.

James Carter plays a H.Couf Bass. I agree, he gets around well. Im a big fan of James, and, hes a nice guy (met him as WSC)
