My school band teacher has some extra baritone saxes and offered me one to rent for the whole school year for just $50! I can choose a YBS-62 or an old king vintage model. I have never played tenor, do you think it would be too hard to adapt to bari from alto?

Why not? For that price, go ahead try it and find-out 8)

Personally I think I'd go for the YBS-62 (assuming it's in decent playing condition)

it has a dent in the bottom under the bell but I have played altos with similar problems. Do you think that my hands may be too small for it? I am a pretty little guy. LOL I am a freshman and even though i've known the band director for years I was shocked he gave me this amazing offer. Im so excited and cant wait till I get to take it hame. I dont even have to play it at school to rent it. Initially I was going to rent a clarinet but he didnt have any so he offered me a bari sax... and I guess i am rambling. LOL sorry

The Yamaha bari surprisingly felt like my alto (Vito student as far as key spacing goes. I think you would have much problems with it.

Wish I had band directors walking around offering me the use of a $5000 proffesional baritone sax for only $50 a year... :!: :!: :!:

I second Kim's choice between the saxes, mostly because the key ergonomics on the yamaha will be easier to mange while starting out.

I guess that makes sense considering I play a YAS-82Z so I am used to the Yamaha keywork.

Wow. My band director loans us horns, but they've got to be used for school events. By which he means anything remotely related to educating ourselves. No playing on street corners, alas.

I think I'd be willing to go back to High School... if I could be in your band! Man, back in the day, we marched with the lowest instruments you could find. I don't think we owned a single yamaha instrument. Oh, yes, we did have that old Yamaha tuba...

Don't worry about the size of your hands. Most modern bari's are totally set up for people with average sized hands, so it shouldn't give yo much trouble.

A 50+ year old returning musician just joined our community band and it will be some time before he can play well. But I talked him into renting a bari after loaning him my yana 990 (with an otto link metal mouthpiece).

He sez's most music shops want $50 a month for a rental! He's gonna try one out for couple of months and then if he decides to stick with it, he'll try to locate a used bari. I'd say a $50 a year rental is a steal of a deal.

TooSaxy
09-05-2004, 05:30 PM
do you play them in the band???
because I dont even have to play it in the band, and it is completely covered as far as insurance so if one of my siblings break it (which they wouldnt live to tell about) I wouldnt have to pay for it.

I am so PO'ed :x my dang music teacher was supposed to give me that bari today or tomorrow and he traded both of the bari saxes over the weekend for 2 stupid bass clarinets. What a moron. :x :x :x :x :x I can rent a tenor if I want but that is a fricking YTS-23. :-x :x :-x :x :-x :x :-x :x im so mad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brendan Muse
09-07-2004, 11:02 PM
Ouch! THAT'S friggin' harsh, but if the bass clarinets are of good quality, you might want to try them. Or get out that herald trumpet and see about convincing your director to do the Posthorn March.

TooSaxy
09-07-2004, 11:08 PM
They are crappy generic brand bass clarinets that I tryed and they cant even play in tune. Whats the PostHorn March? And I've tryed brass instruments and really prefer woodwinds I can rent a tenor but it is a crappy beat up YTS-23

Brendan Muse
09-07-2004, 11:15 PM
Well, the post horn is a french horn without any keys or curvey stuff that takes advantage of the keys. If you imagine normal french horns as F-trigger trombones, the posthorn is a normal one.

The posthorn march was written by Mozart for a friend of his who played it. It's normally played on a french horn now, but it would be friggin' awesome on a herald trumpet, which is the same thing, but not curvey.

Oh well I would prefer to stick to woodwinds for now and I dont want to do flute yet right now I can play clarinet oboe and sax and the instructor doesnt have any oboes or clarinets and for the past week I have been really excited about the bari he said I could rent and he goes off and trades 2 good baris for 2 crappy bass clarinets I am still really pissed he could have at least traded for bass clarinets that play in tune he is so retarded.

bariman
09-08-2004, 12:23 AM
Tell him that the people on SOTW (or atleast Bariman) says he dosen't what the hell he's doing if he traded a YBS-52 and 62 for two crappy, out of tune bass clarinets. I bet both the clarinets aren't worth what the 52 is. Beg him to get one of the bari's back. Bari is a great instrument, and a total chick magnet, so don't let this dream die needlessly.

Well right now I am so pissed at how stupid he is that if I go talk to him Ill end up beating the crud out of him. He is a really small guy. It wasn't a 52 and a 62 it was a King vintage model and a YBS-62 but those clarinets aint worth half what that King is worth and that King aint worth half what that 62 is worth im just so pissed at him being such an idiot. :x :-x He is a trumpet player and maybe he only cares about trumpets and thats why hes a retard with woodwinds.

bariman
09-08-2004, 01:06 AM
Oh woops don't know where I got a 52 from. My old director was a Brasswind player as well, major on trumpet. He wasn't that bad though, he was always giving us a chance to double on other instruments, so my view of the other instruments is a lot more accurate than other musicians. Anyway, like i said, I wouldn't let this stand. But don't do something stupid like **** him off. Just beg him for the 62 back, or whatever you can get. Tell him he just lost a professional bari sax for a couple of bass clarinets. Most saxophonists will never even play a 62 bari. It's not like a 62 tenor; the thing cost upwards of 5 grand for god's sake! I feel for you man, but don't let your anger get in the way of your music.

A cheap bass clarinet is 1 grand, two of them is well... 2 grand.
A YBS-52, 3500 at WWBW, YBS-62, MUCH MORE THAN THAT.

WHAT A DUMBASS. (sorry for the swear, but can't describe it any other way)

Im gonna talk to my old band director from middle school he was a fellow sax player and I remember all three of the bari players that were at that school when I went there played on YBS 62 baris rented from the school. I will see if he has an extra one or else I will just rent a contrabass clarinet from my high school band director.

I had a blast playing Contra Alto Clarinet, I would think Contra Bass would be even more fun. I believe that thing is in the same range as a tuba.

Brendan Muse
09-08-2004, 12:11 PM
Yeah, contra bass clarinet is fun. I went to a college for a jazz camp and dug out a foul old contra alto, and jamming on that thing was a blast, even though it didn't have an upper octave because I had to tape over the octave key because it was bent.

TooSaxy
09-09-2004, 12:14 AM
Well I checked in the Contra Bass Clari and he doesnt have any more but I went to my middle school today and I couldnt find my old director I will try again tomorrow I know my old director only had one ContraBassClarinet so my chances of getting that are slim and none.

TooSaxy
09-14-2004, 02:55 AM
well I have no chance in heck of getting a bari now so I went to the teacher and decided to rent an oboe lol I will get it tomorrow

My Birthday is this saturday and my dad said that I could pick a really good gift or get a bunch or small gifts and I picked a soprano sax. The soprano is a Helmke I've heard they play quite well for what they cost

Brendan Muse
09-14-2004, 03:09 AM
See if you can play the oboe in jazz band. XD That'd be great!

TooSaxy
09-14-2004, 04:00 AM
lol yeah that would be awesome and it should be easy to learn fingerings because they are a mix between sax and clarinet. those are the two instruments I am best at. I have heard that oboe has a really hard embouchure to learn so it is good that it is challenging. I still wish I could have gotten that bari sax though.

bariman
09-14-2004, 04:03 AM
Well, you've got more guts than I do. There are two, no three instruments I will never play unless they become profitable to double on: Violin, and Brasswind (except Trombone, maybe), and any double reed. OK maybe one day I'll try the double reeds and the BW's some day, but I swear to my creator and everyone on this earth that I will never attempt to learn violin. Thats like going to China and starting a human cloning program. Way to many of them to begin with, so I think i'll leave it alone.
