If "UTF-8" were used instead of "iso-8859-1" as the website character set, then we could use real sharp and flat music symbols instead of "#" and "b". But I'm guessing nobody wants to edit any phpBB code.

It's been a few days. I'll try the edit, if you can tell me what you need me to change!

At the top of every page is:

meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1"

Ideally we want to change it to:

meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"

Not to sound like your mom, but I'd recommend testing it on a backup first. 8)

...BUT, before we take any further action, I'll try to find out if there are any known issues with this. Stay tuned.

... the structure of a phpBB forum is that there are three parts (files, really) to every page: an overall_header.tpl, an overall_footer.tpl and the middle part, where you have all the actual topics, posts, etc.

Sorta like an HTML frames page, but without the frames.

Just because you change the setting in one, doesn't mean that you change the setting in all. Also, the "middle" area cannot be edited through an HTML editor, as far as I've been able to see, because it's essentially SQL code.

Just so ya know ...

I can say that there is no option in the phpBB Admin panel to change the page encoding.

How would one type those "real symbols" ?

Why not create an Smileys serie "music symbols" with b/# in ?

it would be easier to maintain, to type, to program ...

and could be easily extended to double/ half #/b or whatever one needs ...

Sorry for my bad english...

No problem.

I, for one, don't really have a problem with # for sharp and b for flat, but if you wish, g'head and design some small GIFs and send them to me. I'll upload them.

I will be uploading some musical notes as "smileys" soon.

Very interesting... I hadn't thought of going the smiley route...

I don't quite understand what all the hubbub's about. # looks close enough to a sharp and b looks close enough for jazz to a flat.

Oh yes, and Kenny G is close enough to jazz that...

If it can be done, why not?

Oh yes, and Kenny G is close enough to jazz that...

No sense in gettin' facetious. :)

Looks pretty nice to me.

Leave 'em up for a bit and I'll download them.

Here's a couple questions, though:
* While you can just point and click on a smiley, do you wish to have a keyboard equivalent, like :)?
* I got ya whole bunches of notes and clefs. Would it be better if someone would just create, for example, a natural sign, for those? And/or?
