You've been playing for 2 weeks and you want to play songs already -- I like that enthusiam -- however, you'll have to learn basic embouchures and breathing patterns if you want to play songs -- and have them sound nice :) Get accustomed to your instrument. Practice intonations, long notes and all that boring stuff before you try to play songs.

well, worldirc, you and i have been beginners before, and you probably remember the kind of enthusiasm we had when we just picked up an actual saxophone after air-saxing all the while before that. haha.

however, i must agree with worldirc on this. as enthusiastic as it may seem to try and play songs, it can actually prove to be very discouraging if you cannot nail it. i remember when i first started out, wanting to play like the pros. needless to say, being unable to play at their tempo (and that was the least of my problems) really drove me up the wall, many times to near breaking point. i kinda eased up after that and stuck to more kiddish stuff to work on my technique, sound, etc.

yup, the beginning is gonna be pretty frustrating cos you can't play all the songs and the way you really want to in your heart. just suck it up (or blow).

Yea, in fact, a few months ago I just switched to Alto from Tenor. I can play it fine and everything, but not 100% as well as my Tenor. I am entering first year University and I'm double Majoring in Music. I will, on my day off, be going back to my high school. Thursday's is their senior band rehersal and that's my day off. I plan on going back to "Band practice" so I can learn the alto using the easier music that they use -- and it won't cost me anything :)
