Hello everyone. I posted a few weeks back and explained that my dad was the original importer for SML in the US back in the late 50's - early 60's. He passed away some years back and now I've begun to liquidate his business thatdid continue on until 2000 ... anyway I jsut came across a carton full of what appears to be SML trumpet mutes ... has anyone ever heard of SML making these? They were all wrapped up in French newspaper dated 1961. I just thought if I was ever to find the answer to this mystery it would probably be on this forum ... I have pics if anyone cares to see what I'm talking about.

I have an old catalogue for SML brass instruments and accessories. I'm pretty sure they didn't make them, but it's odd to think SML reversing the stencilling idea for brasswinds. There's no date on the brochure but I would guess the 60's.

I would heartily recommend checking Google or another search engine for a brasswind Forum. While I'm allegedly "the source of all SML sax knowledge" (at least, according to SML :)), I don't know much about their brasswinds. I THINK they might have stenciled Couesnon instruments, but I really don't know. The only instruments that SML made themselves, to my knowledge, were woodwinds and some double reeds.

Also, just because SML stenciled instruments, doesn't necessarily mean they didn't just make accessories on the side or have 'em branded for them, much the same way an Apple Computer pen is really a Bic with an Apple logo on it.

This also means I have no clue as to the value -- if there is any. I was formerly married to a brasswind player (didn't work out, so I married a sax player :)), but I don't seem to remember her expressing an interest in vintage mutes.

Definitely check out a brasswind forum.
