I am going to Holland and will be in Amsterdam for 3 days (April 18th~21st) and I would like to check out some good jazz or blues clubs. Any recommendations?

Check listings when you get there for "Bamboo" it used to be exclusively jazz but I think some nights they do other things now-it's up near Liederspliene(sp)-small dark and smokey-just the way it's supposed to be.

Café Alto is a nice place to go. Every night live music, near the Leidseplein.
And the BIMhuis is a good jazz venue, tho you need to check their program (www.bimhuis.nl).

I second Club Alto...

Free entrance, good music.
Drinks are a bit pricy but it's well worth it.

Many thanks for the recommendations...ended up at Cafe Alto and it was as good as you guys said.
There was a female trumpet player there that night with a real good rhythm section.
I enjoyed it immensely!
By the way, there is a Mexican restaurant 6 doors down from Cafe Alto....
If you're hungry for Mexican, pass it by. Boy was it ever BADDD!

Thanks for the advice guys - just got back from few days in Amsterdam - went to both bimhuis and cafe alto

bimhuis is a larger, more formal listening environment with excellent sound and a nice pub outside the auditorium. saw a young pianist called edwin bergh - very good

cafe alto is small, dimly lit, smokey, slighly seedy joint just off the happening leidseplein - all good things for a jazz club :) the sound wan't great, but the ambience is awesome .....both well worth a visit.

also ended up at the Last Watering Hole in the wee hours..... nice cofee shop/bar/cheap hostel ......bunch of students jamming........me thinks the night's festivities made it all seem much more interesting than it really was ! :a-run
