Can you give me some ideas for a good hard rubber mpc on my sx90r tenor.
What do you use and why?
Thanks!

Try the Vandoren ones (there is a chamber and facing for every taste) or a Meyer 6M. I tried loads and found these work really well. I also liked the Yanagisawa metal pieces on a JK tenor.

I use a Morgan 7EL. Because they are the best you can buy imho. They outplay every other mpc I've ever tried.

In my experience, large chamber works better than medium chamber on the SX90.

Chris,
I don't know what mouthpiece they are providing with current sx90's,but my '93 model came with a HR keilwerth "jazz" piece that i think is great, for hard rubber. really easy altissimo all the way up and booming low notes, what else is there?

The 'Jazz' pieces that came with each of the four JK SXR Anniversaries I have had, were more likely made of plastic and near to useless. Quite likely they have changed supplier since you got yours, but mine remain unused!

Hi sarge,

the keilwerth 7 jazz, which was delivered with the tenor sax is not so good for me. All Keilwerth mpc are produced from Ernst Schreiber company in Germany. The Keilwerth jazz 7 cost about 70 $.

I am looking for a warm sound mpc with plenty of power. What do you think about berglarsen ebonit, otto link tone edge, vandoren java or meyer hard rubber?

Do you play of one of these mpc?

Chris,
I don't do much mellow playing anymore... mostly rockin' blues, stuff, with a brass Dukoff, but when I was doing jazz standards, I used a slant signature otto link, with a 7 tip. these have gotten very expensive now, but I find the early babbit models still get that sound, and are available here and there, for less than half the price of a slant sig.
another nice warm piece is the NY meyer hard rubber. not too spendy and a big warm sound. tip sizes need to be a lot bigger for me, the best I played was a 10.
good luck and enjoy the journey.

What about HR links and bergs?

I'm using a Jumbo Java T75 and it works pretty good. It's got a ton of projection.

Chris - I've got an older (80's) Keilwerth Toneking Exclusiv and a Berg Larsen ebonite (115/0 M), or Otto Link tone edge 7, with either Rico Royal or LaVoz reeds gives a full but edgy sound.
The Berg is possibly the more focussed of the two, with the Link being a real blues 'bruiser'.
I seem to remember that Grover Washington used ebonite Berg(s) on his Couf/Keilwerth(s) ?
Both mpcs I've used are 60/70's vintage, don't know about the performance of current production models.
Regards, Alan.
