Well I am about to jump head first into solo gigging. The only previous gigging was done with my HS band and I actually need to get paid real money instead of the occasional gift card for Kroger's.
I'm moving to Philadelphia at the end of August and I need a bit of money for expensive college tuition. Hopefully I will be able to do some kind of workstudy thing for extra money but, as a wise man said to me once, "You get paid for what you know." They way I see it with the right maneuvering I may be able to use my 13-14 years of musical knowledge in a way were I can get a good bit of money to help me out.
What I would like to know is how should I go about jumping in like this? All I have is a Sax. To broke for mics and such...
WHat songs sound good soloed on an alto?

Good luck getting gigs as a solo sax player... you'll need it!
Seriously, your best chance of getting paid to play solo will be busking.

What are you going to do for tunes? If you play from approx 7pm to 11pm that is 4 sets. Figure at least 40 minutes a set, that meansyou need at least 10 tunes if not more. I dont know how long you can stretch a tune playing solo but 4 minutes would be an eternity.

So that means you need 40 tunes, maybe more like 60+, unless you are going to play the same tunes repeatedly.

Do you have 40+ tunes memorized or are you going to read them out of a book?

Im just curious.

I agree, busking is probably your best bet.
