I got an offer to buy a Kohlert tenor in a pretty good condition, just wanted to know if someone can give me more info about it. It says:
V. Kohlert a synove
Kraslice
C.S.R.

serial No. 284596
A880

What year that could be?
What would be fair price for this one? I don't want to pay much more than it's really worth..

Thanks for any advice

I own a Kohlert sop and have owned a V. Kohlert & Sons alto that was made in Czechoslovakia, like the tenor you've described. Both these horns were made with high quality materials and play very well. In many ways, I wish I hadn't sold the Kohlert alto. It was a killer horn, but I didn't fully appreciate it at the time.

I'd suggest visiting Pete's http://saxpics.com to see the fine job he's done presenting the various V. Kohlert & Sons saxophones.

I recently purchased an old tenor saxophone. On the bell is "V. Kohlert & Sons and on the back there is a serial # 20754 and a triangle with the words "The best in the world" in a circle around the tringle. At the top of the triangle are the letters JK and at the bottom tip is the letter G. Can anybody tell me if this horn is worth repairing? It's a lacquer horn (bad condition) and doesn't play at all. I suspect dried out pads. The mechanism seems good and there are few dents. Thanks. Also on the back it says "made in Chechoslovakia."

JK is "John Kielwerth". Others can chime in on if it's worth repairing. I would think it is. The "G" may be Germany.

The first horn mentioned is a serial number that is way too high to be a vintage Kohlert. May be Amati or something made in Asia?
The second is more likely to be one of those conglomerates, with parts from Keilwerth and Kohlert both. Kohlert and Keilwerth and other German/Czech instrument makers did a lot of 'collaboration' in the war years, and their war years lasted a lot longer than elsewhere in Europe and the US.
