View Full Version : Mad Meg Tenor
I'm looking for a back-up tenor and I was looking at the Jupiter Artist and the Mad Meg tenor. I'm guessing that the CB is going to be better for jazz.
But anyway, let me know what you all think of the Mad Meg.
BTW, I play a Yanagisawa T-900, Runyon Metal Spoiler 5 mp, and Marca 1.5 reeds.
About how much do they cost new?
Has anyone every seen Gerald Albright playing a CB sax? I’ve seen him (pics) playing a white selmer.

Gerald Albright endorses Cannonball saxophones, and indeed does play them sometimes. They even have a "Gerald Albright" model saxophone at Cannonball.
The Mad Meg is a beast. I've only tried one once, but it has POWER and resonated. Good core and a big sound. Great jazz horn.
I'd get the CB. You can find a really good price from Tim at www.saxalley.com, just make sure you don't have Cannonball dealers around you. OR, you could get one second-hand and save alot of money. The re-sale value on the horns isn't that great. Good luck!

A used Conn or Buescher will be better for jazz. The CBall is a sturdy, powerful horn, though. If your version of jazz is fusion, R&B, or smooth jazz - go for the CBall. Buy used to save. You should be able to find something for around $1350.

I agree that you can save a bundle buying used. I got an astounding price from SaxAlley on my CB, but the resale value of these horns is so poor that they make even THAT price look fairly high.
I've also read an awful lot of good things in general about Jim Scimonetti's shop in Lancaster, California, if you find yourself out that way. I haven't been there myself (although my job will amazingly take me to Lancaster in about two months, so I should get to visit), but I know Scimonetti is a CB dealer, and I think deals in most major brands as well.

I was just reading an article on Pete Christlieb where it says he has been a long-time Selmer player but has been playing a Cannonball (don't know which model) lately. That's a pretty good endorsement.
But...If you are looking for "another" sax maybe you'd like a Cannonball, but if you're looking for a "back-up" (something less expensive but with similar characteristics to your Yana) I believe the Jupiter Artist would be a closer match. I need to qualify that. I have not played a Cannonball but believe I understand their sound characteristics from all the posts on this forum. I have, however, played both Yanagisawa's and the Jupiter Artist.
