Which one is considered a paint-peeler?
... and which of these might be considered a doorstop?

Vandoren Jumbo Java A95 for Alto. Joe

I agree with 'Andrew' on the Dukoff. I mentioned the Jumbo Java because I thought 'colibri' was asking about a 'good' paint peeling mpc. I have a Dukoff D6 and it was overkill. Joe.

I had a Barone Rock/Fusion mpc that would tear a hole in your eardrum.

5 votes in the "other" category. I'm assuming this is the Guardala series?

Dukoff D6 on an SX90R (tenor). Not only peels paint, but can drill holes in glass. And it annoys neighbors better than any other combination.

No piece has ever come close to the Rovner Deep V metal piece. Loud without an ounce of warmth. I played it once and then back in the box and goodbye. K

A Britone tenor m/p. Doesn't look that bright at first glance...but.
A Runyon metal Smoothbore was the loudest alto piece I ever played. Unbelievably loud. Played pretty well too, but I sent it back to WW/BW. Sort of wished I'd kept now. Was actually sort of fun to play. Just didn't have the richness of my Meyer.

Other. I have no experience with the listed pieces. My vintage Berg Larsen stainless is pretty loud. My vintage Brilhart was even louder but I stopped playing it because it had TOO much edge, if such a thing is possible. It would crack windows and make the fillings in your teeth rattle.

I'm grinding my teeth just thinking of an amatuer saxophone player with one of these stuck in his mouth. I'm surprised that Berg and Guardala aren't on the list. I can scare guitar players with my Crescent and the right (wrong?) reed.

there's also Claude Lakeys and Runyon Quantums - they easily outpower a Jumbo Java.
Still, I'm very tempted to get a Dukoff to compete against a lot of brass players - its interesting trying to compete against 8 brass players being the only alto one player!

I'll ditto the Brilhart level air. I've got 2 tenor and one bari will probably be for sale soon, too much power for my needs.

Berg, why Berg? You don't peel paint with a chainsaw, I hope?

What's the difference between a bari sax and a chainsaw?
-The chainsaw is easier to tune
I think that's what he's getting at.

Growler vs Squealer
If that's the distinction being made, then Jolle's remark "Berg, why Berg? You don't peel paint with a chainsaw, I hope?" is misinformed. This is even the subject of another recent thread, "Dukoff vs. Berg Larsen Metal Tenor Mpcs". The last post in that thread is from Baphomet saying, "I know they're both good choices for peeling the paint of the wall ..."

Anyone had experience with ARB alto mouthpieces ala Nelson Rangel?

Interesting thread, but I was wondering, given any of these pieces/setups, how much the horn makes the difference in power and projection? IOW, you might have a paint-peeling setup, but might some horns dampen the effect relative to others?

Haven't you guys ever played on a Runyon Smoothbore AKA "Spoiler"? Those things strip paint, remove rust and generally shreak like a banshee- er... in a good way!

I also received a ARB alto mouthpiece from ThunderWhale and it was great reminded of the tone of a morgan large chamber piece

I used to have a clear plastic Dukoff, that screamed 7 ways to Sunday. Bright to the point that I had no chance of blending in a sax section, and thats on a Martin Tenor, a fairly dark horn!

Mines a later model, just pre Mexico, still in decent shape. Had one Saints? Did you lose here, I know I thought your Bundy could have been mine, as far as I know my wife isn't yours, is there a way to tell? Any missing lacquer or dents that are distinct?

I use one of these, and it might be the loudest piece on the planet, but it still has full sounding core sound! Really nice piece! I have one made in West Germany with the nice older rubber they used to have.

My experience with a Rovner Deep V was just the opposite. On a Martim Tenor ( which I wish I had'nt parted with ) the setup could be very powerful, but it also had a warm side. My "paint peeler" is a Delrin Runyon Quantum #14 opening. Lord have Mercy.
