I've got the chance to pick up a king Marigaux tenor. One of the last SML's in the 26,xxx range. Should I stick with an SML Gold Medalist or are the Kings valued and respected the same as the sml's??

This horn was in average shape sitting at a pawn shop for 500 bucks. I almost stopped back by last night and just bought it. I stopped by today at lunch and it was gone. Someone bought it first thing in the morning. Oh well...

Not only did they beat you to it, but they've already got it on E-Bay:

At least I guess it is the same horn. Too bad- $500 for an SML or King Marigaux in good shape would have been a steal.

So, 1968Z28, did the one you missed out on have a broken side Bb tab like the one at eBay?

And how the heck does one break that key? Must have been one heck of a trill!

Hey, 1968z28
I guess it's a little late to answer your original question now, but they really do play great and are identicle to the gold medal mk II.
Years ago, playing professionally, I had a chance to a/b my similar year selmer mk vi to a new king mariguax. it was set up well, from the factory, and i was blown away by how much stronger, fuller sounding, less stuffy it was than my mk 6, and how much better the intonation was... being a "pro musician" at the time (read as monetarily challenged), i had to stick to my mk vi, because it was, after all, paid for
I have been a big supporter of all sml's ever since then.
good luck in your search.
