I've owned a '64 Zephyr for years, but recently picked up another on eBay. I didn't really want it, and intended to tune-up and sell it. This thing is a MUTHA!!! Altissimo: Where do you want to go? Low end? Smooth. Action? Prefer it to my SerieIII.

Dilemma: My mother, who passed away a little of a year ago, bought me my Zephyr. This new one is FAR superior. Do I:

a) Keep the new one and sell the sentimentally valued one
b) Keep the new one and make the Selmer the back up
c) Keep the new one and have it share time with the Selmer
d) Sell the new one for a mint to someone looking for a vintage-type horn

Keep all three! Put the old girl in a stand and enjoy her from afar and play the other two if they are better playing horns. You didn't mention the age of the newly acquired Zephyr. If about the same serial number range you may want to consider a first rate overhaul for your original '64 to bring it up to the standard of your new horn. If the new horn is a lot older the '64 may never measure up however.

Sell the selmer and get both kings done up first class.

I admit that I have extreme GAS, but I currently have 5 tenors (I sell and trade many of my horns over time:
King Super20 (very early Eastlake) 45xxxx SN
Two King Zephyrs, one with sterling neck, 2xx,xxx SNs
Selmer SA80 320xxx
Keilwerth Modell Ponzol 85xxx

Guess which one gets the most play...the Zephyr with the sterling neck (not likely to be sold or traded unless I can afford a really cherry Super 20 from early 50s)...I keep thinking that I should replace it with something 'better'....hmmm

Thom,

what would make you happiest? THAT is what your mother would want.
