Ok so im kinda having a crisis. Next year I am going to be a senior in highschool. I plan on Majoring in Music Education with a minor in woodwind performance, or possibly Major in woodwind performance and minor in music education. either way, i need to find colleges to start looking at. I am currently working on Ibert's Concertino Da Camera (just so everyone knows my current playing level). What colleges have good sax programs that would work? I am planning on taking visits to Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Westchester University of Pennsylvania sometime this summer. I was thinking about a conservatory or college like UNT, but then i decided I dont want to get ulcers from being forced to practice 24/7 at a place like that. Im looking for a college that is somewhere around 20k a year, or a college where i could get enough scholarships to make tuition 20k a year. Im looking for anyones opinion on this matter. Thanks!!

I think you're on the right track by looking at IUP, one of the most underrated colleges in the nation. Dr. Stamp (the wind conductor) is one of the most fantastic guys I've ever met. He bought me breakfast when I met him at an allstate that he was doing. I don't much about their studio faculty, but their ed program is good from what I've heard. I have a few friends that have gone there and a few friends that are currently going there. You might also want to look at Indiana University, it's a little less intense than UNT, but still good. Maybe check out UNC (Their ed program is good, but their sax prof just retired). Good luck in your search, and good luck on the Ibert :D

I believe U Michigan has a fantastic sax program right now, and last time I looked U Iowa had Ken Tse working with their studio. It also depends on what kind of school atmosphere you want to go into... both of these are Big Ten schools (what I get from going to PennState) so you have a big campus and a lot of people everywhere (and paying out of state tuition, so that may not help you). Make sure you're good with the other factors of the college you're interested in and not just the "how great is their sax section" factor. Just my $0.02. Good luck!

(sorry, I don't really have a comment, just wanted to say)

Thanks for that heads up bmusic88, I live about 30 mins from U of Iowa and didn't realize they had such a nice sax program. Of course, I've already decided to go the "financially safer" route of engineering and will be going to Iowa State this fall.
Guess I'll have to keep an eye on my rival and see if there's any concerts I can sneak off to and see.
