OK all you Chicago players. I'll get it started. The Chicago thread was pretty slow on the old board. Let's kick it up a notch!

Steve,
I saw that on your web site. I have a gig on Friday and Sunday, so I will probably need to tend to family matters on Saturday.

Here we go.
I live in Lombard and am rediscovering my Alto. I used to be pretty good. The rust is shaking off and the tone is starting to come back. Many hours of practice are ahead of me. I grew up playing mostly symphonic music and a little bit of classical as well as jazz. Jazz never made much sense to me as a young person but I now feel that I appreciate it and can finally understand what is going on with the music. As a result I'm making it my goal to be fully immersed in the jazz/bepop/etc.
If anyone is playing out in the western suburbs please post and we'll get to the gig.

Our Band, "Code Blues" will be at the Satisfied Frog in Warrenville on May 3...at 9. We do a bit of jazz, but mainly blues, with a touch of funk and R&B. Steve

Well, I'm not a Chicagoian, but close. Live in Bloomington-Normal, and try to get to the city every couple months or so, usually to the Showcase. But I'd love to catch some great local gigs. Please continue to post your gigs, or recommended gigs, here!
And one quick ????? Anyone know where I might go to hear Mike Smith, an alto player from Chicago, to play? Met him when I was in college and he was a super nice guy and I really enjoyed his playing.
Thanks!

For you Chicago area blues fans...and,yes, Saxhound this means you..."Roomful of Blues" will be at Blues on the Fox in Aurora this Saturday. Caught them at Chord on Blues a couple of months ago...their new bari player, Mark Earley is very fine...and Rich Lataille is as good as ever.

WDCB does a good job with their Jazz Calendar. They are also online at www.wdcb.org.

Steve,
Sorry I missed it. We had a gig at Peterson Park in McHenry. What a great day to play outdoors. One of these days I'm actually coming to see your band. I've got your web site bookmarked, but I have been gigging or out of town for your last few jobs.

This looks like the closest group of folks to where I am located in "Normal" Illinois....OK, OK, now that we have all gotten a good laugh out of a "Normal" sax player, I will tell you that it is my "son" who is the sax player.
Hello to Jazziz1! Sent you a seperate email......
Anyway, I am trying to track down an old college band-mate that plays in the Chi-town area (or at least used to). Anyone ever run into Kent Minor? Used to be a "monster" player.
My son is developing quite nicely as a jazz player. The problem is, at only age 14, it is difficult for me to get him in to hear other players because of the "under-21" thing. "Jazz at the Bistro" in St. Louis is a great venue for that but I was wondering if there are any spots up North - preferably in the Southwest burbs that would allow a "minor" to come in and listen - or better yet sit in!
If you are interested, here is his website.

There are audio clips form the Christmas CD he did on the site. I would be interested in any feedback.
Thanks! GO ILLINI!!!!

Kent subbed once with a wedding band I played in about 15 years ago. He is a monster player! I think he belongs to AFM Local 10-208, so you might be able to find him that way. I looked in my local 48 directory, but didn't find him.
Did Kent play at Duquesne U. in Pittsburgh? I have vague recollections of a bari player named Kent Minor in the DU Jazz Band in the early 1970's.
