Sax players in central florida, want to bring all your saxes and get together? Maybe jam, shoot the breeze, etc.? I live in Orlando and I play alto and bari currently, owning bueschers: aristocrat 271xxx alto, a true tone 171xxx alto, and a true tone bari 170xxx gold plate. I am a recent transplant from MD and want to finish my college degree down here (I'm 22, been playing for 8 years) and do music and I don't know ANYONE! so whattya say?

Where in Orlando are you, and where in MD are you from? I'm a transplant from Chevy Chase, MD, now out in Brevard county.

From Greenbelt/College Park to east central Orlando. Moving back north next year, I can't take this heat/rain/job market.

Totally understand. I've been here 12 years, and every year I think about moving back.
Then I stay. :?
You got problems with the Music job market or day-job job market?

day job market. I'm only 23 and not good enough to make a living doing anything music, and too poor for lessons at the moment. just doesnt seem to be as much interesting day job stuff here. guess i got too used to seeing job ads for crazy lobbyists and friends-of-the-arts nonprofit groups, stuff that would be interesting to a "musician", although calling myself that is overstating a bit.
how about you? what keeps you here? what sort of stuff do you find to keep your musical side interested in this part of the country? i hope to go see gayle fredenburgh at vintagesax soon to try out every horn she will let me try, but other than that living in florida hasn't been too musical so far- unless you count boy bands.

Well, I'm 29. I'm a computer geek by training, married and have kids so that's the main reason I stay. Plus I know I'll have to make 3-4 times my current salary back in MD to have the same lifestyle I have here.
SO I stay. For now. 8)
As to music, I play in a community band and a local 18 piece jazz band. Sometimes. As my work and kids schedule allow it. I gave up trying music as my full-time gig quite a while ago (mid way through college).
I wish I had more time to play and practice.

I plan to be in the Gainesville area in a couple of weeks. The North Central Florida Blues Society puts on a monthly blues jam in Gainesville....the next one is Sunday 10/17...in the evening. Nice bar...well organized. I know that would be a drive for you, but if you play blues you will enjoy it.
The NCFBS has a web site and a quick Google search should get you there...but if you can't track it down I'll post it. I plan on bringing my tenor.

it seems like its been a while since anyone has replied.. I am going to reply anyway.. I live in LakeWales... it is in polk county.. and not even on the map.. I have only played for 4 years... but my heart is in music and i am dedicated.. I got all angry with my mother about three days ago for just mentioning that i may change my mind and quit one day.. I can't even stand the thought.. I am known for my Sax.. and tendency to be a bit of a klutz. And even though the band is thought to be a bunch of nerds i don't really care.. in fact.. I put "Band Nerd" on the face of my organizer. lol. I am a freshman at Lake Wales High.. and First Alto Sax. in the band.. I am planning on taking up the Bag pipes in our scottish unit and staying with the sax next year.. I also play the Piano and the Dulcimer.. and i will start Violin My sophmore year as well. I will play eight instruments before i graduate college and continue after. Music keeps me sane. ::grins::

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT ANOTHER VIOLINIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BTB, multi-instrumentalists do better at all their instruments than others because they have many different views to see playing one instrument from. You'll also be more attractive to colleges, especially if you major in music, or music education. Advice: Take up Violoncello or Viola instead if you insist on playing strings. You'll get more oppurtunities to play. Kinda like a flautist vs a bassoonist. But then again, do what you want, that's why it's called advice.
