New Black Nickel

Just bought a new A1-B and love the way it plays, but I have a question for you fine folks. Are all black nickel plated cannonballs a more grayish-pewter finish than dark black, or just this last production run? I love the way my horn looks, just curious. Thanks for the replies.

It is not supposed to be black like a black-lacquered sax, it is, as i put it, gunmetal colored, which is more of a steel/black color rather han black

"Gunmetal" is a great way to describe it. It really is stunning. What a great horn! Any tips on keeping it looking great? This is my first plated sax, my Selmers are all laquered.

If it is truely nickel plated which I hear they are it is very durable.
Nickel is a soft metal and can scratch like brass but adheres great to it.
Tarnishes very slowly. Keilwerths were darker in their plating too. I wonder if some toxic substance had to be removed and they can't achieve the dark black nickel finish anymore?

As far as i know, it is not actally nickel plating (however correct me if i'm wrong you people that know this stuff for sure...), but black nickel lacquer, basically the color that it would be...

I asked the owners....they say it is anodized nickle plating then lacquered.
Anodizing is what aluminum products like storm windows and doors get and it is quite durable.
The Gold is gold lacquer the silver is actual silver plate.
