Ok this is ooollldd news but when i tried out for all county band the tryouts are basic you know play 3 scales and sight reading and prepared piece...This year I got 7th chair...Yes, I was very upset..I was actually shocked at the time..Because when I tried out for my chair positions at my school out of 8 alto saxes I got first and I got the highest score out of the entire band a 98/100 doing 6 scales and a sight reading...
Well, I wouldnt have been upset if the players that were above me wouldnt have been ..well not good...When they played high notes the band director had to stop the band and tell them how to play high notes and keep them in tune and tell them to bring it down a octave and when the 1st chair alto played his solo the band director told him to vibrato and he didnt even know what it was......I sooo wanted to say I can play them in tune move and virbrato....I told my band director this..He said trying out and making high chairs is not what makes a player good..He said for example Dizzy Gellpsie sat low chairs until he got out and got heard and everyone found out what he could do...
Well the point of this post is do you think that tryouts should be done differently than they are ??? Like use certain skills and show them what you can do with prepared pieces you bring ??
