Im heading to uni in three months and Im kee to try and play a few gigs to give me some pocket money. Its in a different city from where I live and I've only done gigs in my home town (restaurant work, short sets at local jazz club, cocktails) and don't have any contacts to rely on when I go to uni. So I am therefore wondering how to get work, before I just got gigs through my sax teacher who had alot of contacts, but I no longer have that. I haven't got any tapes or anything and haven't really had any write ups ets, so I don't know how to go about about it. I been to the uni and checked out the local town and there seems to be plenty of trendy bars, plush hotels etc that I suspect may be interested but I don't know how to approach them? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I had the same problem when I first started. Just go where the music is and try to sit in and if they will not ( and this will happen many times) give him or her your card and say thank you and try again later. I did this for about a year before I got a house gig that lasted for 4 years. Hang in there and don't give up!
