My '71 SDA alto is dressed in a very dark honey coloured lacquer.
Is this what is known as 'sparkle' ??

All I know of this horn is that it has high F#, is in wonderful condition and simply sings.

I've looked at several images on the Saxpics site and it certainly has the same tint but it does not light up like a christmas tree under flash photography. It does glitter mildly though - More so than brass coloured horns.

Was this sparkle LQ a random thing, or optional like high F#

It makes no difference one way or the other, but it's nice to know.

you would know if it was sparkle lacquer immediately when you snapped a flash picture. my 61 SDA may have had it, not sure, it's a real players horn if you knw what I mean. check http://www.cybersax.com bear used to have some pics up there of a closet SDA with sparkle that he sold a few years ago, you may have to probe a bit, check the gallery section... it was a very neat effect.

My 1960 SD Alto has the sparkle lacquer and it's 99% intact. shine a flashlight at the bell or anywhere on the body and you'll see sparkle. A thing of beauty and I'm glad mine has it, although I'm sure it would sound the same (great) without it.

I had a 1961 SDA alto with sparkle lacquer. It's funny how those sparkling subtances remain even when the lacquer has worn off.
