Actually, doing it manually would be the best way, its great practice and you never know when you might have to do some of these transpositions at a gig

Yes manually is fine but I need some tips to get started...
Is there a conversion procedure or is it just a play it by ear thing?

greyim - there are two ways to transpose in Sibelius. With an existing passage of music, mark the passage, click Notes on the toolbar and a box will open up with options on how you want to transpose, i.e. in what direction and what intervals.
The second is to create an instrument (Create/instruments) and again you will have a dialogue box with options. This time you choose the instrument directly, make the appropriate clickes and you will be returned to your score page. Just click on the page and a staff with the appropriate instrument will appear. Once you have this passage on the "paper" you can shuttle back and forth with the transposing-score button (the tow b's) on the tool bar, to concert and transposed pitches.

OK, let's give it a try.
First, I don't know what you mean about a piano barline. A piano -staff- is two staves connected to one another. A barline is the vertical line that separates one measure in a staff from another. Since I don't know what a piano barline is, I'm going to overlook that statement and not address it, OK? I don't think it's going to matter. Here we go.
I am assuming you know how to select "New" to get a fresh page, so let's continue from there. I'm going to use alto saxophone as the example.
- click in the toolbar on Create and choose Instrument. You can also right-click your mouse on any blank place on the music paper.
- click on the woodwind category in the left-hand dialogue window.
- a list of woodwinds will appear in the middle box; click on alto sax and alto will then become highlighted.
- below that, click on "add". You will then see in the box on the right ("instruments to create") the words "alto saxophone". Click on OK.
Now on your Sibelius score music paper page, you should see an additional stave for alto sax. This new alto stave will be in the transposed key for alto. All you need to do now is enter the passage you want.
If the passage you want to enter is in concert pitch, then you will need to change the alto stave from its transposed status to the concert pitch. You do this by clicking on the button in the tool bar that has two "b"s. That will put the alto stave in concert pitch. Now enter the concert-pitched passage on the alto stave. When you are finished, simply click again on the tool bar two-b-button and, presto! the alto passsage has been transposed to its key.
If you already have a passage on your score paper in concert pitch and want to transpose it to the alto key, mark the passage, click on Notes on the tool bar, select Transpose, and then make the proper selections that will transpose the passage up a major sixth. Click OK and it will return you to your music page with the selected passage having been transposed.

Hi Gary are you still there?
Unfortunately it doesnt seem to work for me I wonder if its because Ive got an older version of sib (1.4) when I copy and paste the bar? it doesnt transpose just straight copies... see midi file:-

I hope what I call chords is correct - the notes with more than one knob on them?
thanks,

Success...
Turns out I needed to use "Transposing Score" not "Transpose..." in the dropdown options.

Graham :D
Glad to hear it worked out, Graham.
