I recently made a list for insurance purposes so I can tell you that as of right now I have 25 woodwind instruments. I'll bet that it gets worse before it gets better !!!!!

Four tenors (13 mouthpieces), two sopranos(6 mouthpieces), one alto (two mouthpieces), two harmonicas, two recorders, a weird wooden flute, a digeridoo (more planned for construction:twisted: ). Plans to add as soon as my wife lets me: bari sax, bass sax, another alto, a keyboard, an electric base, and, heaven forbid, maybe a trumpet. In the past I had a couple of clarinets and a trumpet (loaned and never returned) but gave up on the torture stick a few years ago--but you never know, maybe later...

3 Altos, 1 C Melody, 1 Tenor, 1 Bari. My wife owns an upright string base. Had to buy a minivan to carry it all. When I get close to outgrowing the minivan, I'm going to go take GAS theropy

Family count:

1 soprano, 1 tenor, 3 altos, 3 Bb clarinets, 1 flute, and 1 "authentic instrument," as Prof. Peter Schickele calls electronic keyboards.

Coming soon (or not so soon) Bass clarinet, Bari sax, piano.

Selling soon: One or more of the altos, depending on how long I can resist the new Yamaha prices.

One alto sax. I,ve got a case of GAS real bad though. Every time I go to the local music store to buy reeds, I get the shakes and cold sweats. I conduct my purchase as quick as possible and exit or run from the store. The temptation to spend is just to great. That's why I avoid music stores like the plauge. Out of sight, out of mind. Someday I'm afraid I'll crack and buy that bari at Sam Ash. I dream about it, oh how it shines. That bari talks to me you know. Its calling my name right now. I got to take a pill and lay down now. Catch ya later.

I have 1 sax, a yamaha 62 alto, but i also have 2 trombones, an Olds single French horn, a nice Alhambra spanish guitar, a fife, bodhran and an old fiddle circa 1860. I do not own a set of bagpipes.

1 piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 Bb clarinets (4 mpcs), 1 soprano sax (2 mpcs), 2 alto saxes (5 mpcs), 1 tenor sax (1 mpc). That makes 9 horns, unless you include 2 Irish flutes, 1 alto recorder, and 1 electric bass (not exactly a "horn"). By that reckoning my count is 13.

When the time is right I'll use these results to justify to my wife that everyone owns more than 1 sax. :) I am a member of the lone sax bunch.

I have YTS-62 -tenori and Amati soprano. I WOULD sell the soprano if I could afford some other soprano, but I dont have enough usable money (17 years old student, where to get money?) . I would want Bass or Bari too, I love lower saxes, but they cost too much too...

1 tenor 1923 Conn that a bought from a friend that used it as a piece of furniture.

1 soprano Yana... elmona pro model that friend at church bought after he was inspired by Kenny G but found that he could not play it. He lets me use until he wants it back. He doesn't play at all any more. I have been blessed. :D

So much for the starving musician myth...some of you guys have equipment worth more than the GNP of some small countries. I have a severe case of sax envy.

My pathetic little list:

Musica (Taiwanese) black nickel curved soprano
Yamaha YAS 61 Alto
Yamaha YTS 61 Tenor
Yamaha YTS 875B black lacquer tenor (on its way from WWBW)

Wish list:

Yani SC992 bronze curved soprano (when they are released)
Yani B901 bari (or quality vintage)

Geez, I'm as bad as the rest of you. I just rid of the classic car collecting bug, and now I'm replacing it with saxes. :? :USA:

Roger Aldridge

Four horns: 1929 Buescher alto (246xxx), 1928 Buescher soprano (238xxx), 1919 Conn curved neck c-melody (55xxx), and a new Patricola C clarinet. At some point I'll probably get a Patricola Bb clarinet. But, for now I'm getting plenty of use out of the C and it has a tonal quality that I really like.

Sure! From time to time I think about getting other horns. Especially when I see a particular Buescher at vintagesax.com that results in drool falling all over the computer keyboard. However, an approach that works for me is to get a horn of the make and a general serial number range that gets my foot in the door and then send the horn to Steve Goodson. I've found that when I get the horn back from Steve it plays at a whole new level and I'm entirely happy with it. Thus, I haven't found it necessary to get a bunch of horns or search for a horn with just the right serial number.

My general rule of thumbs is...one horn for each available mouth!

If, and when, you learn ALL there is to know about those, step up to two per mouth!

Not too bad here... lessee...

Yamaha 62 baritone (the main axe)
Yamaha Custom tenor (probably my next favorite axe)
Conn 10M tenor
Yamaha Custom alto
E.M. Winston Soprano (best $475 I ever spent for a horn I can actually gig with!)
Selmer bass clarinet
Selmer series 9 Bb clarinet
Ancient silver Pedler clarinet (and it actually plays pretty well)
King C foot flute
Yamaha four-string bass
Acme siren whistle (okay, I admit... THIS is really my favorite axe)

Wow. More than twenty horns? You could probably buy a small mansion with all that $. (Better spent on horns, though, of course.) My list -

Yamaha 52 tenor sax
Yamaha 225S flute
Electric keyboard (actually more my sister's than mine, but I use it at least as much as she does ... and come to think of it, that's a Yamaha production too)

I'd LOVE a bari sax and a nicer flute (perhaps open-hole -- since I've been studying for eight years! -- but braces seem to prevent a lot of flute fun), and maybe a soprano in the future.

Hey, I'm in ninth grade, give me a break. 8)

1923 TruTone Soprano
Selmer Mark VII alto; Kohlert 57 alto
1974 Mark VI tenor since new. What an incredible horn. I'll be burried with it.
Kohlert Deluxe tenor freshly repadded with domed metal resonators (my beater horn).
3 Buescher C melodies (2 with front F keys and roller G# keys)
Buescher 400 Baritone. I love the tone. It barks like a dog!
Gemienhardt flute & piccolo
Loree' oboe. It has a very good tone when I make a good reed!
Carbart Bassoon. (Loree's intemediate line probably a stencil). I'm not a great player-yet! I use a Runyon bassoon mpc and also bassoon reeds.
Leblanc Symphony clarinet. Boosey & Hawkes Edgware Clarinet.
Kohlert Bass clarinet. What a delightful instrument. I dearly love it.
Selmer Paris alto clarinet; Kohlert alto clarinet

Recently gutted my 'mini-colection'. I now own one old rickety bari sax. I can't say that I'm 100% contented, but I won't buy another horn until I can play the one I got. There's enough for me to practice on that one horn to keep me busy for several lifetimes.

But to each their own. Or in some of your circumstances, your own several dozen!

Of my personal Saxes, and not including my other half:
Soprano: Unison
Alto: Vito

My other half's are:

I only have three myself:

Selmer Reference 54 (Tenor of course - I pity you poor alto users, but not long to wait now  )
Yamaha YTS-275 Tenor
Yamaha YAS-275 Alto

My excuse for such a poor selection is that I have only been at this saxophone lark for 6 months :P . I do have more guitars and keyboards/pianos than I have room for though - my music room looks like a music shop.

Anyway, I may add to the list today - I fancy popping out and getting myself a sop :D

I get asked this occasionally by my wife, son and others. Bottom line is that I don't know!

My best guess is about 40 saxes, 40 clarinets, 3 trombones, 2 oboes, 1 trumpet, 2 cornets.

Last time I counted my mouthpieces it was well over 100 and I think it has gotten worse.

Do I play them all? No, of course not! I started out with my brother's old junky Buescher Aristocrat (NOT vintage.... the later junky ones). Then when it started holding me back, I got a decent Vito 3176, which is now long gone. I fell into a wonderful deal at a pawn shop about 7 years ago. A badly buffed and relacquered Mark VI for $450. I sold it in two weeks for only $1800. Then I found a nice Noblet clarinet at another pawn shop for $100 and sold it for $330. Then a C melody that I "repadded" as a first ever project. I actually got the thing to play although it required an enormous amount of breath. Probably had a ton of leaks.

Eventually, I found that there seems to be a constant supply of good deals on vintage saxes and clarinets and a few other odd items which can be turned around for a decent profit. The biggest thing holding me back is time of course. Family obligations, paying the bills, cleaning house, taking kids to the doctor all eat into my time and sometimes my turnaround is VERY slow.

My relatively huge inventory, is fully financed in cash made by profits of earlier sold instruments. If I sold everything right now as is, I'm certain I could easily pay off our mortgage and have plenty left over.

If you have trouble convincing your loved one that buying another sax is a bad idea, first, find a deal on which you CAN'T lose money. Buy it and resell it and mention the profit to your partner. Do it again. After awhile, they get rather oblivious to how many instruments you have.

My wife knows I have LOTS. She also knows that I get a good return on the money, overall. As a result, she ignores the whole thing. I don't even talk about the details with her...... Recently, I made a great deal with a guy. Bought 5 Selmers, a Mark VI tenor, 3 Superaction 80 tenors, and a SA80 Bari. I spent $6000, but didn't even mention the $ with her. It's my job to find great deals and pay the bills. If she wanted to talk about the $ with me I'd be happy to. After all, we're both CPA's.

I can only play one horn at a time. I just like different sounds. I started playing other instruments in my early teens. I like to have an instrument available for each sound I hear. I keep them all on stands and play along with whatever I hear. It is great fun, good ear training and an expensive hobby. Some people hunt, play sports etc. I play horns and tinker with old convertible cars. I play my VI tenor the most and would pick it if I had to play just one. Mark VIIs are good horns. I like my VII alto. I could liquidate my collection if I needed the money as well, but I would probably go into a major depression. I will have a full set of trutones in my lifetime!

Massive student loan debts and living on beans and rice while going to music school so as to be able to buy more gear.
1 baritone, 1 tenor, and 1 clarinet, and currently looking for an inexpensive bass clarinet and a better Bb clarinet (I'll likely end up selling my Tenor, since I don't play it much and search for an alto, which I'd play more often just due to it's portability and the fact that I'm more comfortable on alto than Tenor). After much eBaying and other sundry activity, which saw something like 42 saxes come in to my hands (the most at any one time was 23), I have now succeeded in getting the inventory down to a mere 5:

1928 Buescher TT sop with Barone HR mpc
1924 GP Buescher TT alto with Barone HR mpc
1949 Buescher Aristocrat Big B tenor with Morgan HR mpc
1935 Conn 12M bari with Yanagisawa HR mpc

Not a bad collection! :)

The fifth is a 1930 SP Martin Typewriter alto with Martin mpc which is lookng for a new home. Great sax in excellent condition, but it does not fit with the overall preference for Bueschers.

Are we counting only fully working instruments ?
(and physically present at home/place of work)

If so

6 Bb clarinets (B12 , solo, 2x vito resotone 3, fluro pink largo, selmer console, B&H Regent)
2 alto clarinets (selmer bundy)
1 bass clarinet (vito)
1 soprano sax
1alto sax (etunes)
1 tenor (desidera)

Otherwise if we are counting all instruments working and non-working
total Bb clarinet count is 19
(mostly in need of repads/corks)
1 Eb clarinet and a box of bits
(probably enough to assemble a few Bb's )

1 amati alto sax , with leaks

with 2 alto's and a tenor in the mail at the moment - for repair pile as well.
1 alto for re-pad buescher NA, 1 alto for overhaul(conn), tenor not sure yet(pads at the least - buescher true tone series 2)

Now wheres a good place to get decent sax springs ?
Music medic were very nice and sold me clarinet springs, might have to ask them.

Slowly starting to put pics up of some instruments (one so far - tenor sax)

I am using this thread to help me realize that I need still fewer horns. Every time I think "Gee, why does that person need so many _______", I realize that it's time for a lil' introspection.

Yes, I'm sure that it applies to mouthpieces too. After all, how many people are satisfied with just one mouthpiece for each horn?

Yes I was, and I still do. My 6m is a wonderful horn. The mark VI just has better pitch and evenness of tone that the 6m doesn't have. All in all the VI is a better horn, but that doesn't mean that the 6m is not good.

My wife has made not-so-veiled threats.

Sopranino, Soprano, Alto x 2, Tenor, Bari saxes
Eb clarinet, Bb clarinet x 2, Bass clarinet
Pocket trumpet, Flugelhorn, Baritone horn

Nothing vintage except maybe my Pruefer clarinet. The rest are new and cheap (cheap being applied in a relative sense for the bari and bass clarinet).

If I ever get serious about any particular instrument I'll get a nice one and sell a bunch of these, but I don't see either event happening.

Saxmanglen, I have many horns and I'm about ready to have someone pick them up, I'll give you my address:shock: . Jupiter Alto and Grassi Alto in parts are the only sax's I have right now. The theif would have to be pretty ambicious to get anything for them in their current state of disassembly. I also have a box of about 20+ student flutes and another 6 or so in process of repair.

I have over the 9 limit in the playable catagory, mostly flutes. The Grand piano might take some effort on behalf of a potential theif as well.

PS, did I mention my two large dogs and the shot gun?

Hello Everyone

New member here, first post - seemed as good a place to start as any:

1 alto - Selmer S80 II
2 tenors - Selmer Mk VI (121xxx), Selmer S80 II (that's the daughter's really)
1 bari - Selmer S80 (low A)

Awaiting one of Mr Barone's bare brass tenors as we speak - I'm getting worried about leaving the Mk VI around at gigs!

Flutes: Mateki (silver head, open hole, low B), old Grassi, daughter's Yamaha OH.

Clarinet: Selmer Console (don't laugh... oh, you already are).

There, 1 post - wahey!

I have one really bad junk horn in my possession which has temporarily replaced a much better junk horn (which met a vandal and a drink of pure acid at a gig - the acid went into the sax, not the vandal, more's the pity :x ),
and I almost have a Conn New Wonder :D which is currently in the possession of the USPS and which I am very eager to meet for a long and devoted relationship,
and I have a Boosey & Hawkes clarinet from my birth year which replaced a revolting plastic thing my folks dug out from some cabbage patch when I learnt music in high school...

Where was the gig, in that roadside bar in "Open from Dusk til Dawn"? Maybe he mistook your last initial for a "G" instead of a "D".

Anyway I should list mine:

Chinese alto "Solist" Yanni 991 clone bought from Kessler Music
1929 silver TT alto
1947 The Martin Tenor

Right now all I can play is the clone since the real horns have been in New York since Xmas awaiting our arrival at the end of June, when we go on vacation. At the time I didn't think it a good idea to have them shipped here to Spain, but the long wait is beginning to drive me as crazy as a man on a desert island. I've been seeing mirages of saxes on the horizon. I hear they are caused by GAS...Oh, that isn't the horizon...it's eBay.

Started a new job a couple of years back, and it's grown to the point where I haven't got much energy left (wont see 60 again) and never seem to play anything except the killer Mk Vi alto I bought at Chrristmas as a gig horn.
However I had visitors for a meal last Friday, and they wanted a demo.
Amazingly, all nine still play great (# 10 is a basket case double socket King bari thats in the "one day" book.
So they got curvy sop, tipped sop, straight and bent alto, nailfile melody,2 tenors, straight bari and Conn bass. Haven't seen them or the cat since:)

Soprano: the "Micraft" bought Friday - http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=78972 for the dirty details
Alto: Jupiter JAS-767 I've had for 15 years or so, recently repadded
Tenor: thoroughly smashed up and barely playable Yamaha YTS-23, looking for a replacement
Bari: Dolnet Bel Air with a low A

Also two flutes, two piccolos, Evette clarinet, and an assortment of guitars and a couple keyboards. Plus various recorders and other toys from the "under $20" bin, one of which I've given full keywork. Then there are the keyless PVC flutes, a count of which would be pointless because I keep building more, and I even have one now with limited keywork -- http://mal-2.com/gflute/two-key_g-flute.jpg -- it's a prototype but it plays well enough to gig with, within its limitations.

So right now it's 4... will be 5 if/when the Aquilasax C-melody ever ships.

EDIT 3/28/08: Also have a Buescher Aristocrat alto... so it's now five.

She's your girlfriend so she has no choice (which IMO is the way it should be:twisted:), but look out if you decide to tie the knot, cause if she doesn't understand GAS now you're in for trouble for sure!! And I speak from experience :-(

My wife's new rule is, if I buy either a horn or a piece of musical equipment or spend money on one of my antique cars, she gets to buy herself some jewelry.

That reminds me of an old co-worker. He had a habit of taking off his wedding band and spinning in on his desk at work. (His wife had scolded him many times for doing this at home.) One day it flung off the desk and, even after dismantling his cube and the cubes around him, was never to be seen again.

He went home and told his wife what had happened. To his surprise, his wife didn't seem that upset. So then went to the jewelry store and purchase a new wedding band for his hand.

A few weeks later when he received the credit-card bill in the mail, the charge from the jewelry store was nearly an order of magnitude higher than what his ring cost! He told his wife as he was about to call the store to have this problem corrected. She asked him to hang up the phone as there was no problem. She simply said, "If you get a new ring, I get a new ring. If it happens again, plan to add another zero to the end of the bill."

He no-longer takes off his wedding band...

I have five saxophones. I started with an old Pan-American C-Melody that my Uncle gave me (it was his in college), then got a Bundy II Alto to use in school. A year or two later I bought a Martin Tenor, which I used up through high school until I graduated. A few years before that I got a "Woodwind" Soprano, which I got to play in a few concerts. Tomorrow my Sopranino will be arriving in the mail (a risky buy which hopefully will work out well).

My wife's new rule is, if I buy either a horn or a piece of musical equipment or spend money on one of my antique cars, she gets to buy herself some jewelry.

With my wife I don't think it's a parity thing cause I don't care how many pairs of shoes or handbags she has (she should wear a sign on her back that says, "Warning, I Have SAS and stop suddenly for shoe stores!"). It's just an issue of space with her: "Where are you going to put that thing? You've got music stuff all over the house and now the Casio Keyboard you bought in the LR, and blah, blah, blah." And it's not like our apartment is small either. My wife likes order, which in her book means not saving or collecting anything and throwing it all out as soon as you no longer are using it according to her judgement. My mother did that with my baseball cards when I left home for college (merely a couple of thou worth of original Mantle, Mays, and Jackie Robinsons :(, but who knew back then) so I'll be damned if the spic and span syndrome will keep me from having more than one sax.

Anyway, the war is about to heat up when my one Cheap Chinese alto is joined in 2 weeks by a 1927 Martin Wurlitzer stencil that I just won on Ebay. After she gets used to that new reality, in July when we go to N.Y. she'll meet the 2 saxes waiting for me there, a 1928 silver TT alto and a 1947 The Martin Tenor, along with 4 vintage mouthpieces.

I might be sleeping on the couch and get the silent treatment for awhile, but who cares 8-). A guy has got to take a stand, especially when dealing with someone that still doesn't comprehend the joys of a poking around in a good hardware or electronics store:shock:.

Martin HC Wurlitzer stencil alto -- gold re-lac with great tone and action

I've decided to keep the total confidential. It just isn't normal, but I will say that I've done better at investing in saxes than keeping the money in the bank.

Recently, my new saxes have been so expensive that I've sold 3 horns to buy 2. That means my total has decreased.

Some of the expensive ones are here:
