No I haven't heard of your band, I don't know many American bands. I was wondering if you've heard of mine- the Tea Tree Gully Redbacks. We've performed in the 'Sensational Adelaide International Police Tattoo' and our band marched immediately after the Band of the Irish Guards. I also performed with the Band of the South Australian Police- have you heard of either these bands?

-Aren't Redbacks horrible poisonous spiders? I think we have them here in NZ too.

Well, I hate to brag, but here in Washington, we have amazing music schools, Garfield, Roosevelt, Mead, edmonds-woodway, mount lake terrace and TONS of other good schools. We have had three schools go to essentially ellington the last 3 years in a row, more than any other state, Garfield and Roosevelt have won it for the last 4 years at least, and this is the biggest and most competetive jazz festival for high schoolers in the world (monterey is good, but no ellington).
Texas is good, but it's no Washington.

I've got to say with the recession hitting the US pretty hard a lot of schools are cutting band out of the curriculum. Other schools hire one band director for many schools. If you are in a great school program, thank your lucky stars.
If you don’t have a good school program, lessons and setting up your own group can go a long way. A four piece (or so) band with a sax, bass, drums, and keyboard… oh yeah. Wish I did that when I was young. Then there are many community bands, or if you are good enough, paying gigs.
The play, that’s the thang.

It sounds like that whole post was bragging...
Up here in Canada, we don't hear a lot of bands from the US... certainly not texas. Do you guys have a website?
Texas bands? hell, we never even hear of Toronto bands up here, let alone Texas. Sorry dude, but internationally renowned is not exaclty something that high-schools in general are.

Yes, i ahev heard that northeastern schools are good. Do west virginian schools ring a bell. i just remember that state out of many states of the NE that my band director listed.
Also. has any one heard of the midwest competition in Chicago. It is one of the best known competitions in the us. Almost every year a band from tx is picked, and there are only like 4 bands picked out of the us.
http://www.midwestclinic.org/board.asp That is the url for the, sorry, proper name of that competition, which is the midwest clinic. If u checked out under "who attends" YOu will see international school as well as schools across the us. Almost every year u will see a couple bands from tx.

oops, look under performers+bands, by the way all of the tx bands u seee listed are in the houston area.
Judge bands not by their location but by the quality of their players. I'm sure both states, Washington and Texas and many other states, provinces, districts, and countries, have outstanding bands and music programs. What matters is whether the band and music program you are in right now is good for you.
I've played in many international groups, and once you begin respecting your peers as fellow musicians, you begin to realize that it really doesn't matter where they're from. And you begin to realize that no matter where you're from and no matter where you go, there will always be bands with great reputations and bands with no reputations. Reputations are something YOU have to build--don't count on walking in one.
I know that your hometown/home country (or wherever one may call home) can be a source of great pride, and it's the pride that brings color to our world. But don't, under any circumstance, allow pride to become arrogance and pave the way to ignorance.
Forget the state lines and international borders--just play music.
